Triple Dog Dare Challenge

Big D’s and Big D’s Catering is issuing a Triple Dog Dare Challenge during the Sullivan OctoberFest.
Beginning at 5 p.m. Saturday, Oct 19 on the mainstage ten Big D owner Dennis Ozier challenges anyone with appetite enough to consume three Moultrie Monsters with chili/cheese and three cans of soda in 15 minutes.
Each participant will receive a free T-shirt and if you succeed in the challenge the entry fee will be refunded.
Must be 18 to enter with $100 first prize; $50 for second and $25 for third.
Applications are at the Sullivan Economic and Chamber of Commerce office on Jefferson St. and at Facebook at bigdsdogs minimum contestants 10 maximum 20. Call or text 217/728-2195 for more information.

BFD Ghost Rally Has the Clues

The Bethany Fire Dept. Ghost Rally begins in the Okaw High School gym Saturday, October 12.
Line up is at 4:00 p.m. with the rally beginning at dusk.
Come one, come all for a night full of spooky fun and adventure!
Jump into your cars with friends and family collecting all the clues to solve the mystery along the backroads of Bethany.
There are raffle drawings and concessions adding to the fun with all proceeds going to the Bethany Fire District. Find the event on Facebook or call 217/259-9953 for more information.

Sullivan Cross Country Teams Compete in Tuscola Classic

Sullivan girls’ cross country runner Tori Turnbaugh placed 18th, and Katherine Kite finished 21st to earn Tuscola Classic trophies.

The Sullivan cross country teams competed in the 42nd Tuscola Classic at Wimple Park Saturday.
The boys’ team placed 11th and two girl runners placed in the top 21 runners.
For the boys, Chase McClure lead the Redskins with a 14th place finish and a time of 17:37.49. Read More

Dine With a Doc®

Senior Education Ministries, Inc. in partnership with the Sullivan Community has scheduled: Dine with a Doc ® -Sullivan on the 1st Tuesday of every month from 11:00am-1:00pm at the Max J. Knight Community Building Banquet Hall (@ Mason Point) located at One Masonic Way Sullivan.
The Dine with a Doc®-Sullivan is scheduled for October 1st.
Dine with a Doc® is a FREE educational program that welcomes the local senior public to getting to hear an educational topic while enjoying a complimentary lunch. No need to bring any money! Just bring a questioning mind, an appetite and perhaps a friend.
This program is a community effort of a doctor, a lunch sponsor, the senior citizens, local churches and area businesses coming together for the good of all to serve the senior citizens. Read More

The Old Stem-Winder Railroad Watches

What is the difference between the old and newer watches used by railroad workers? Being a former railroad employee from many years past, I happen to own an old “stem-winder,” a name applied to watches of that era, the movements of which were powered by a spring. A stem protruding from the top of the watch was used to wind the main spring, hence the name stem-winder. Subsequent to that era when all watches were powered by a main spring, a stem was still necessary to change or set the time on most watches, including those powered by battery.
So what were the significant differences between the old railroad watches and a pocket watch carried by other gentlemen? Here are a few. Railroad watches were required to comply with a standard set of rules pertaining to watches that were used in service by railroad employees. The rules required that my watch be inspected by a jeweler, designated by the company to be authorized and qualified to examine railroad watches, to determine their integrity and dependability. Mobile Mammography At Beacon

Sarah Bush Lincoln’s Mobile Mammography Services will be hitting the road at area county health departments and banks in October.
The van will be at Moultrie County Beacon, Sullivan on October 21.
To make an appointment for a mammogram on the mobile van at a location near you, call 1-800-639-5929.
The Mobile Mammography van helps provide mammograms to women who may not otherwise have access to, or be able to afford these life-saving preventive screens. Women who qualify will receive their mammogram free.

Redskins Crank Up the Offense Against the Rams

Last year, the Sullivan-Okaw Valley High School football team combined for a total of 60 points for the entire season.
In four games this season, the Redskins have combined for a total of 96 points.
Friday night during the Okaw Valley homecoming game against Shelbyville, SOV put 40 points on the board, but lost its fourth-straight game, 56-40.
At Okaw Valley High School in Bethany, the Rams jumped out to a quick 21-0 start in the first quarter, but SOV answered with 13 straight points. Read More

Sullivan Golfing Redskins Continues Winning Swing; Westjohn Ties for Medalist

The Sullivan boys’ golf team picked up more wins this past week.
Monday night, Sullivan won a triangular meet at Altamont with a team score of 164.
Logan Westjohn tied for medalist with a score of 38.
Drew Rogers followed with a 39, and Camden Dwyer shot a 42.
Leyton Ellis scored a 45, and Gary Herschberger finished with a 49.
Saturday, the Redskins placed second in the Windsor Invitational with a score of 319. Read More

Sign collision at Agri-Fab

In the late afternoon of Saturday, May 31st, there was a single-vehicle accident, with the vehicle making contact with the Sullivan Agri-Fab factory signage located at the factory frontage on Hamilton Street. Per Sullivan Police Department’s Chief of Police, Andrew Pistorius, the airbag was deployed in the incident, and the driver refused medical treatment. No further information is available at this time.
