County Board Amends Budget For MCHD

The Moultrie County Board approved amending the Moultrie County Health Department FY 2020 budget by increasing the revenue by $123,094 in the following amounts: DHS Census 2020 FY grant $10,000, COVID 19 Crisis Grant $35,672 and COVID 19 Contract Tracing Grant $77,422. “These were grants that came in after the start of the year; that’s why they weren’t initially in our budget,” Angie Hogan said.
The board approved a motion to reinstate payment in lieu of tax monies to the townships for FY 2021. According to Chairman Dave McCabe, they originally decided to take money out of the funds to help fund a request for the dive team, but the Budget and Finance Committee discussed this over the last few meetings and decided that it was not fair to the townships to take that money out of the townships’ budgets. City of Sullivan Designated A P.O.W.-M.I.A City

The city of Sullivan was awarded a special designation by Jefferson Barracks during the most recent City Council meeting. Pat Freesh, co-chair of the P.O.W./M.I.A. Cities, Counties and Campus Program of Jefferson Barracks, declared Sullivan a P.O.W./M.I.A. City.
Freesh said that P.O.W. means prisoners of war and M.I.A. stands for missing in action and that there are currently still more than 80,000 prisoners of war and those missing in action. He presented Mayor Richard Glazebrook with a proclamation and signs that will eventually be placed at the entrances to Sullivan depicting the city as a P.O.W./M.I.A. City. Read More

This series of articles noting Sullivan’s 175th anniversary is focused on answering one question. Why did voters of the new county of Moultrie choose an empty spot at Asa’s Point near a mosquito and rattlesnake infested lake as their county seat instead of the booming village of Nelson (a. k. a. East Nelson or Old Nelson) just four miles to the southeast?
The 1881 Combined History of Shelby and Moultrie Counties says Nelson lost because it was not in the center of the county. It also said that unclear land titles caused the whole town to be shifted a quarter mile east and renamed East Nelson a few years before the county seat fight. Read More

Sullivan Girls Cross Country Competes at Central Illinois Conference Meet

Though the Sullivan girls’ cross country team did not have enough runners to fill a full team this season, three runners have competed as if running for a team score.
Sullivan’s three runners competed in the 7th Annual Central Illinois Conference meet at Forest Park in Shelbyville Thursday, Oct. 15.
Sophomore Tori Turnbaugh ran a season-best time of 21:26.3 for 13th place. Read More

COVID-19 Update

The Moultrie County COVID-19 update for October 17-18,2020 is 20 additional cases of COVID-19 with ages ranging from 6-80s. The total residents tested positive to date is 363. Total COVID-19 related deaths to date are 5.

County Clerk Urges Voters To Apply Soon

Moultrie County Clerk Georgia England is urging voters to apply as soon as possible if they want to cast their ballots by mail for the November 3 General Election.
The statutory deadline to submit a mail-in ballot application is October 29, which is also the last day in which a ballot can be mailed out. England, along with other Election Authorities and state leaders, recommend voters apply much earlier so Clerk’s offices and the USPS have sufficient time to deliver the ballots. More people this Election than any other Election have chosen to Vote By Mail. England states that if you wish to Vote By Mail, don’t delay, do it now. Voters are encouraged to complete and return their ballots as soon as possible and not wait. Read More

Trunk or Treat

Trunk or Treat will be hosted at Smyser Christian Church on October 25 from 4-6pm. Bring your children in costume to see decorated trunks, collect candy, ride horses, and enjoy hotdogs and s’mores. Invite your friends and come join us for this SCC sponsored FREE event.

Sullivan Schools have parent-teacher conferences coming up on Tuesday, October 27 and Thursday, October 29. This is an opportunity for parents to visit our schools and spend time learning about the happenings in their children’s classrooms. All IDPH guidelines regarding masks, social distancing, and cleaning will be followed. New for this year, parents will also have the option to attend parent teacher conferences remotely if they choose. This is the third year that we have hosted conferences on two evenings instead of an evening followed by a morning. The change was made after analyzing attendance during previous conference days.
