ALAH Girls Basketball Team’s Balanced Attack Leads to Wins

News Progress Posted on January 23, 2019 by webmasterJanuary 23, 2019

From the first day of practice, Arthur-Lovington/Atwood-Hammond girls’ basketball coach Mac Condill wanted his team to improve every day.
“That is truly my goal as a coach,” Condill said. “To continue improving and taking advantage of every opportunity we have in practices and games to gain a better understanding of the game of basketball and improve our skills. We have modified practices and how we approach things in order to try and continue to improve.”
It seems to be working.
“You never know until the season actually gets into the last couple weeks, but we have had point production from all sorts of players,” Condill said. “We’ve had eight players score at least eight points in a game at some point this season. That’s the kind of balance and options you need as a coach to hopefully battle for championships.”
The Knights knocked off Blue Ridge/Deland-Weldon last Tuesday and Arcola Thursday (Jan. 17) to win the fifth annual Little Okaw Valley Conference Northwest Division Tournament championship in Bethany. Read More

VOD Essayist is State Bound

News Progress Posted on January 23, 2019 by webmasterJanuary 23, 2019

•January 23, 2019•

Sullivan high school senior Paige McLaughlin’s essay on “Why My Vote Matters” has won her first place at the local and district level, and she is heading to state.
On February 8 she will travel to Springfield to compete in the VFW’s 72nd State of Illinois Voice of Democracy Contest and the chance to win $1,000 in scholarship funds. If she is successful, her next journey will be to the national competition in Washington, D.C. where a $30,000 scholarship will be awarded to the winner.
McLaughlin is editor of the school newspaper and involved in National English Honor Society, National Honor Society, Singers Crew, Scholastic Crew and WYSE team to name a few. She works summers at the Little Theatre on the Square.
McLaughlin was inspired to enter the contest because, as a new voter, she has definite opinions on the theme of “Why My Vote Matters” and also the opportunity to win scholarship money.
“I figured I might have a good chance,” McLaughlin began. “I had thought about the subject for some time, and my ideas were so well-formulated that I wrote the essay in about two hours.”
Her essay was warmly received at the district competition where she received a standing ovation at the end of her reading.
In her essay she makes the point that “…one vote can sway the outcome of anything, even in non-political cases.”
She urges people to always vote for what they think is right and for the person most qualified regardless of political party.
At home she has the company of her parents, sister Maggie and the family cat, Moses. She plans to major in English with an emphasis on creative writing and a minor in theater when she enters college in the fall.
In Springfield the contestants will be treated to a pizza party Friday evening, a Land of Lincoln tour on Saturday and an awards banquet Saturday evening.
“I have been to the Lincoln Museum but never to a big banquet so that will be interesting,” she said.
The Voice of Democracy competition was established in 1947 and is an audio-essay contest to provide high school students with a unique opportunity to express themselves in regards to a democratic, patriotic-themed recorded essay. Nearly 40,000 9th-12th grade students enter each year to share $2.2 million in scholarships and incentives. Application forms are usually available online in the fall.
The national first place winner receives a $30,000 scholarship paid directly to the winner’s college, university or trade school.
Each state winner receives a minimum $1,000 scholarship and an expense paid trip to Washington for finals.
The theme for 2018-19 is Why My Vote Matters. Originality is worth 30 points, content is 35 and delivery is 35 points. Other national scholarships range from $1,000 to $16,000.
Tickets are available to the state competition banquet on Feb. 9 at the President Abraham Lincoln Hotel at 701 E. Adams in Springfield. They may be purchased by check to the State of Illinois VFW website. Click on the Contact Us tab, then the Donation tab. Be sure to indicate that your check is for the Voice of Democracy banquet. No tickets will be sold at the door.

It was an eventful week for the Sullivan girls’ basketball team.
The Redskins defeated Central A&M to stay undefeated in the Central Illinois Conference, earned top seed in the CIC Tournament, moved up to the No. 3 team in the Associated Press Class 2A state rankings and knocked off Shelbyville in first round of the tournament.
Thursday, Jan. 17, the Redskins defeated the Raiders with the help of 16 points, nine rebounds and three assists from freshman Lilly Null.
“Lilly Null played her best game of the season,” Sullivan coach Sheri McCain said. “I am so proud of how she stepped up tonight.”
After falling behind four points in the first quarter, the Redskins turned a 20-8 second-quarter run into a 29-21 halftime lead.

Life Was Different After the Move to Christian 40

News Progress Posted on January 23, 2019 by webmasterJanuary 23, 2019

By Evelyn Burtcheard
NP Guest Columnist

One year and one week after the twins were born, the smaller of the two babies passed away in his sleep. His condition with his heart was called a “blue baby”, and he was not as active as Jerry. He had a quick smile and seldom cried unless he was picked up. Dad put a bed in the living room so he could be with the rest of the family. Carold wanted to be left alone on the bed and watch the other boys.
Jerry on the other hand loved life rough and with Donny. Jerry was happiest when he was in his stroller, handles removed, being pushed around the living room or the kitchen table by Donny.
I went too slowly to suit him, and Jerry loved speed. Carold enjoyed being talked to or read to, and I loved to read to him.
Our home was a very sad place after the baby died. There were no more fast rides for Jerry. The laughter had gone from our home. I remember the day Dad picked us up at school and stopped at our mailbox on the way home. Aunt Dora was waiting to talk to Dad.
At this time Dad worked the day shift at Allis Chalmers and got home in time to drive on south to our school and pick us up in bad weather. Now Mom wanted us picked up every day, and she would worry until we got home. We walked most of the time because of the gasoline shortage, but we rode to school with the neighbor kids’ mom if she took her kids. But that was usually when they were late, and we were already at school. Read More
