ALAH District Joins School Conditions Survey

Arthur CUSD #305 will join the Illinois State Board of Education (ISBE) in the seventh statewide survey of school climate and learning conditions. The survey provides a unique opportunity for students, teachers and parents to have a voice in improving their schools. From November 15 through January 18, students and teachers will be asked to take a 25 -minute research-based survey to help identify strengths and weaknesses in their school’s learning environment. The parent survey supplement will be administered from October 23 through January 18. These surveys will serve as an opportunity for schools to reflect on progress since the last statewide implementation. Read More

Vineyard Church Hosts Awards

Everyone is invited to the Vineyard Church in Sullivan Saturday, November 3 for the American Cancer Society North Central Region Awards Banquet.
Dinner served by Terry Warren Catering begins at 5 p.m. with the Awards Ceremony scheduled for 6 p.m.
Roast beef or chicken, au gratin potatoes, green bean, tossed salad, dessert, iced tea, water, lemonade and coffee will be served.

Moultrie County election equipment was publicly tested at 10 a.m. Monday, Oct. 29. Above Unisyn Optical Scan and Touch Screen tabulating equipment is tested in the courthouse Elections Counting room by Democrat County Chairman Tim Singer (left) and Republican County Chairman Dave McCabe. Illinois State Board of Elections Representative Mike Montney conducted a State Board of Elections test. Early voting is offered 8:30 a..m. -4:30 p.m. M-F at County Clerk Georgia England’s office. Election day is Tuesday, Nov. 6, and the courthouse will remain open after polls close posting results.

Recent Obituaries: Charles Stiner

Charles Stiner

Charles ‘Chuck’ Edward Stiner, 66 of Sullivan passed away at 11:41 p.m. Monday October 22, 2018 in his residence.
Memorial services will be held at 6:30 p.m. Monday in the Reed Funeral Home, Sullivan with Pastor Michael Loy officiating. There will be no visitation. Burial will be at a later date. Online condolences may be sent to the family at reedfuneral home.net.
Chuck was born April 15, 1952 in Decatur the son of Donald L. and Emma Porter Stiner. He had been a mechanic who could fix anything. Chuck married Shirley Doty on July 1, 1973 in Mt. Zion.
Surviving are his wife Shirley of Sullivan; daughters Heather (Mike) Loy of Charleston and Heidi (Clay) Brush of Sullivan; son Jason (Amy) Stiner of Sullivan; father Donald L. Stiner of Pana; brothers Denny (Maureen) Stiner of Owaneco, Terry (Crystal) Stiner of Windsor; sisters Mary (Dave) Brazel of Overland, Missouri and Donna (Keith) Willey of Safety Harbor, Florida; grandchildren Addison and Owen Brush and Lexus and Zoey Rockwood.
He was preceded in death by his mother and daughter Christina.

Workshop at SAIL

SAIL, Soyland Access to Independent Living, will host a free workshop concerning Scams, Fraud and ID Theft 1:30-3 p.m. Tuesday, October 30 at First United Methodist Church, 216 W. Jefferson in Sullivan. The speaker is Shari Rowe, Postal Inspector with United States Postal Inspection Service.
The workshop is free; reservations are not required. For more information call Betty Watkins, Rural Outreach Coordinator, at 774-4322.

Community Pitches in for Nohren Family’s New Home

There were many thankful tears flowing at the house blessing for the Nohren family as friends and clergy gathered to bless their new home at 919 W. Strain St. in Sullivan.
A huge platter of chocolate chip cookies baked in the new home greeted the guests along with fresh lemonade. Kristen Conlin and Amy Rickelman of Fireside Investments served as hostesses and welcomed the guests to the renovated three-bedroom home.
Pastor Francis Farney of the First Apostolic Church offered the opening greeting and prayer. The Apostolic Church provided the Nohren family with temporary housing until their new home could be completed. Scripture readings from Deuteronomy and Matthew followed, and then everyone joined in the prayer blessing of the house. Read More

Martins Host Benefit Recital

Philip and Nina Martin will host a piano recital in their home at 2 p.m. November 3 to benefit the Moultrie County Beacon and the Moultrie County Counseling Center.
Admission to the event is free and open to the public, but a free will offering to benefit these nonprofit agencies will be collected. Read More

SOV Football Closes Season

The Sullivan/Okaw Valley football team finished its second straight year without a win.
SOV lost its last game of the season 48-0 to Central A&M in Moweaqua Friday night.
The Raiders scored 28 points in the first on four running touchdowns, including three runs of at least 30 yards.
Central A&M scored 20 points in the second quarter and held on from there.
SOV finished the season 0-9 overall and 0-7 in the Central Illinois Conference.

The Kirby Foods meat department delivered hams to the Moultrie County Food Pantry on Wednesday the 16th, thanks to a generous anonymous donation. The hams will provide a nice Easter dinner.
