“I am pleased to announce I am seeking reelection for Moultrie County Circuit Clerk.
Over the last nine months, I implemented the Criminal and Traffic Assessment Act within the Moultrie County Circuit Clerk’s Office. With July 1, 2019, being the effective date, I focused most of my time in office ensuring the transition went smoothly. This act essentially reconfigured the way Circuit Clerks across Illinois collect and distribute court ordered assessments. Read More

Sullivan Council Renews Resource Officer Agreement
•August 14, 2019•
By Mike Brothers
Sullivan City Council continued to field inquiries about the Titus Sentel Estate decision and renewed the agreement providing a resource officer for Sullivan schools at the regular Aug. 12 meeting.
During public comment the council was asked why they moved the vote on Titus Sentel Estate to July 31 rather than the originally scheduled Aug 12 meeting and to put the decision in layman’s terms.
Mayor Richard Glazebrook explained the change in the meeting date was made to move forward, and the required 48 hours advance notice was posted on the city’s website.
He then read commissioner Abbey Sherwood’s motion directing the estate trustees to sell the property and the city buy back all or part at public auction or sale. Read More

Lack of Love and Money Leads to Urban Violence, say ‘Experts’
•August 14, 2019•

Capital News Service
I left the prison on a recent Wednesday with a better understanding of what foments urban violence, after talking with the real experts — inmates who grew up in major Illinois cities.
The Life Skills Re-entry Center at Kewanee, in central Illinois, is like a small college campus, albeit with razor-wire rather than ivied walls. The place is for longtime inmates of the 30-plus Illinois correctional facilities, who write essays as to why finishing their final years at this intensive career education and counseling facility would benefit them. The goal is to reduce recidivism by giving inmates a career such as restaurant management — they run the café and cafeteria — welding, and more, plus counseling on how to live productively on the outside. In the August 7, 2019 News Progress the page 8 story “Art Welsh’s Senior Center Board Service is Celebrated” story by Ellen Ferrera incorrectly stated that current Executive Director Kathi Garvey began working at the Thrifty Boutique in high school. Garvey did not work at the Thrifty Boutique in high school. She worked with Art Welsh for 14 years. We regret the errors.
