Fire damages local restaurant

The Sullivan Fire Protection District responded to a structure fire on December 4th, 12:27 a.m. at 925 State Highway 32, at the NorthEnd Pub and Grill at the Sullivan Marina. Fire crews arrived to find heavy fire conditions present on the east side of the building. Firefighters began a fire attack and searched for victims, but no one was found inside the structure. A Second Alarm was called at 1:02 a.m., bringing additional resources and manpower to the scene. Limited access and icy conditions presented many obstacles for firefighters to overcome on this fire. There were no injuries to firefighters or civilians. Crews remained on scene until 5:06 a.m.

The Log Cabin Across the Road

A friend of mine introduced me to bird-watching when I was a kid. This led to frequent early morning hikes before school to add to my “life list” of birds I had seen and identified. First, I just wandered around our yard or up and down the road in front of our house. Soon, I noticed that all the strange birdcalls were coming from the trees along the creek on our neighbor’s land across the road east from our house.
When my desire to add to my life list of birds grew greater than my fear of trespassing, I went exploring across the road early one misty spring morning. Soon, as I followed the edge of the brush along the creek, I found myself in an unknown world, even though I was only an eighth of a mile from home. I worked my way through the jungle of brush and trees along the creek and came out against a pasture fence.

Lake Land College recently received an $18,903.94 Nursing School grant from the Illinois Board of Higher Education (IBHE). Lake Land will use the grant funds in 2026 to support student outcomes in two specific areas. The first is to acquire educational equipment, including infusion pumps and a diverse set of mannequins and injection arms, which will better prepare students with the hands-on training necessary to thrive in their careers.

Originally the Sullivan Lady Redskins had two games scheduled for last week, but the weather decided to alter that plan. Newton was forced to cancel last week due to deteriorating road conditions. That left the ladies all week to practice and prepare for a Saturday matchup against a good Paris Lady Tigers team.

The Sullivan Redskins had a busy week last week, unfortunately, not all outcomes were in their favor. It was not for lack of trying though as the boys continue to put up strong numbers, improving with each passing minute of every game.
11 mile rivalry
The Redskins hosted Windsor/Stew-Stras for their home opener. Always a great matchup between these close rivals, this game did not disappoint. The intensity of the first quarter gave the crowd a great idea of what the rest of the game would look like. Sullivan outscored the Hatchets 19-17 through the first eight minutes. And the Redskins kept chopping away in the second quarter, out scoring WSS 16-5.

D. Michele (Stearns) Wunderle, 86, formerly of Sullivan, passed away peacefully Monday, December 8, 2025, in Bloomington.
Michele was the oldest of six children born to Sylvester and Doris Matheson Stearns. She was a granddaughter to John Matheson, niece to Jack Matheson and Buddy Stearns and cousin to Sonny Stearns. She graduated from Sullivan High School in 1957.
