No MCH&G August Meeting

The Moultrie County Historical and Genealogical Society will not hold their monthly general meeting for Aug. but are planning to have a Sept. general meeting. Plans are being discussed for the next few months and the coming year. The Heritage Center will be open as usual with hours Monday and Friday from 10 to 2 or by appointment at 217-728-4085.
Lovington Library Hours

Lovington library will have new library hours starting Aug. 15. Hours will be Mondays 9 a.m. to 7 p.m., Tuesday to Friday 9 a.m. to Noon and 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. and Saturdays 9 a.m. to Noon. They also offer Overdrive and Libby for eBooks and audiobooks if Covid restrictions have kept you home.
Oakland City Wide Sales

The Oakland Chamber of Commerce is sponsoring the 36th Annual Fall City Wide Yard Sale in Oakland on Saturday, Aug. 29 beginning at 8 a.m. In conjunction with this, the Hindsboro community, 6 miles west on Rt. 133 is also having a city wide yard sale. Ice Cream Social

Bethany First Methodist Church Ice Cream social will be held on Saturday, August 22 from 4 to 7 p.m. in downtown Bethany. There will be homemade ice cream, pies, cake and cookies. Everyone is welcome.
Sparrows Collection Drive

Lovington American Legion Auxiliary and Sparrows Unlimited members will be doing a collection drive for the kids of Lovington Grade School on Saturday, August 22 from 9:30 to 11:30 am in the middle of town, Lovington. They will be collecting school supplies, masks, hand sanitizer, Clorox type wipes, paper towels, baby wipes, spray bottles for cleaning, beach towels for outdoor learning, picnic tables, paper plates, plastic cups and plastic silverware. Cash donations are appreciated as well.
Safe Sport Program

The Sullivan Blue Dolphins Board has been working behind the scenes to get its program recognized by USA Swimming as a Safe Sport Program. There are over 3,100 USA sanctioned teams and as of Feb. this year, only 138 had met the Safe Sport Qualifications. USA Swimming is committed to providing a healthy and positive environment free from abuse for all its members. USA Swimming’s Safe Sport program, a comprehensive abuse prevention program, consists of a multi-layered approach to keep kids safe, including: required policies and best practice guidelines; mandatory screening, criminal background checks and employment screening; training and education; monitoring, supervision and mandatory reporting. These measures are informed by experts in the field of child safety and are among the strongest safeguards found in youth-serving organizations. USA Swimming’s Safe Sport program will continue to spark meaningful discussions across the country to strengthen open, productive communication channels. The Coaches and Board of Directors for the Sullivan Blue Dolphins are committed to the safety of the athletes. Tryouts for the team will be conducted at the Sullivan Civic Center Saturday, Aug. 15 at 9 a.m..
Eight More COVID-19 Cases

The Moultrie County Health Department (MCHD) has confirmed eight more cases of the novel coronavirus-2019 (COVID-19) in Moultrie County. They range in age from elementary school age to 80s and all are recovering at home in isolation. Public health officials have notified all close contacts.
To date, 2,048 Moultrie County residents have been tested for COVID-19. Of those tests, 60 have been confirmed positive for COVID-19 and 38 have been released from isolation.
To minimize the risk of COVID-19 transmission, the health department is asking everyone to use the three basic Ws:
• Watch physical distance and keep six feet from others.
• Wear a mask when in public places.
• Wash hands routinely.
According to the CDC to help minimize the spread of COVID-19 if you have or think you might have this virus, it’s important to stay home and away from other people until:
• At least 10 days have elapsed since symptoms first appeared and
• In the last 24 hours the individual has been fever-free without fever-reducing medication and
• Symptoms have improved.
People with weakened immune systems may need to self-isolate longer than 10 days.
If an individual is ill with symptoms associated with coronavirus and needs medical or emergency care, they should notify their physician or emergency medical service providers of their symptoms prior to arrival.

Lovington Water Maintenance

The Village of Lovington is currently working on equipment maintenance at the water plant. Village water users may notice changes in water pressure and/or quality while the maintenance is being performed.
Bethany Blood Drive August 11

Theta Psi blood drive chairman
The American Red Cross and the Bethany Theta Psi sorority will hold a blood drive at the Bethany Firehouse on Tuesday, August 11, from 2-6 p.m.
Masks are required, temperatures will be taken and Covid-19 antibody tests will be performed after donation. If one doesn’t have a mask, it will be provided. If a donor is unwilling to wear a mask, we would ask that they would postpone their donation.
Appointment should be made through the Red Cross site 1-800-733-2767 or redcrossblood.org. Rapid pass, through the same website, is also encouraged to speed up the registration process.
We are asking that no one additional, aside from donors and volunteers, are present at the blood drive - i.e no children or anyone not donating.
All blood types are needed. One donation may save 3 lives. Be a hero. DONATE.
