Motorcyle Awareness

Sullivan Mayor Richard Glazebrook has proclaimed Motorcycle Awareness Month within the city.
The proclamation notes that motorcycles contribute an economical means of transportation and it is important to recognize motorcycle safety.
The members of A.B.A.T.E. promote safety, education and awareness programs to over 120,000 participants in Illinois over the past five years.
The proclamation recognizes 33 years of ABATE with 293,676 statewide members.
Liberty A.B.A.T.E. Chapter 14 incorporates riders from Sullivan, Mattoon, Lovington Charleston and the Neoga area. Dennis Arnold is president, Henry McGee vice-president and Glen Bruson, public relations.

Moultrie-Sullivan Fair Cancelled

The Moultrie-Sullivan Fair Board voted on Tuesday, May 5 to cancel the 2020 Moultrie-Sullivan Fair that was scheduled for June 12-13, 2020.
In today’s world with so many unknowns, we feel it is in the best interest to make this decision. We had a great 2020 fair planned and we look forward to being back bigger and better in 2021.
In order to still recognize our exhibitors, we are encouraging you to send us photos. These can be with you and your animals and/or projects. Our goal is to post them on our Facebook page in recognition of all your hard work. More information about the photo recognition can be found on the fair’s Facebook page.

Census Bureau Is Collecting Responses

The Moultrie County Health Dept. would like to remind residents the 2020 Census is happening now.
Those who have not already responded to the brief 2020 Census questionnaire will be receiving a form this week.
If that form is not completed the U.S. Census Bureau will follow up in person to collect your response.
You may complete your questionnaire online, by phone or by mail. Online go to https://my2020census.gov/ or call 1-844-330-3030.

Sullivan Schools Offer Special Ed Phone Conf.

Providing special education services to students with disabilities who attend private schools and home schools is the purpose of a 9:00 a.m. Monday, May 18 phone conference.
Conducted by the Sullivan School District interested parties should call 728-8341 to participate via phone conference at that time.
Parents of a home-schooled student who has been or may be identified with a disability and reside within Sullivan School District boundaries should attend.
Further questions pertaining to the meeting may be directed to Jessica Reeder at (217) 728-8341.

OVHS Senior Recognition

Okaw Valley High School will be honoring the graduating class of 2020 on Saturday, May 9.
OVHS Principal Matt Schoaff announced that a senior recognition parade will pass through Bethany and on to Findlay on Saturday.
He emphasized safe healthy distancing will be observed.
Senior recognition parade participants will kick off the route from Crowder Park at 3:00 p.m. Starting at Crowder the route passes in front of the high school and on to Findlay.
The community is encouraged to wish the group congratulations from the curb side allowing personal safety distancing in the process.

Free Service for Area HS Grads

Sullivan Service Center is stepping up to offer area high school graduates free Lube/Oil/Filter for their vehicles in recognition of the Class of 2020.
“We are all in this together,” Bob Freeman said. With area graduates facing uncertainty about commencement exercises, Sullivan Service Center decided to give every graduate in the area something they can be certain of - quality auto service.
Congratulations to the Class of 2020. Graduates from ALAH, SHS, OVHS or WHS are invited to call 728-8180 to find out more about their free gift from Sullivan Service center.

Fireworks Show In Sullivan on Fourth of July

“We are planning to go ahead with the annual 4th of July celebration,” Sullivan American Legion Post 68 Commander Bob Sims said last week.
This followed the announcement that Arthur had cancelled their annual Fireworks which was scheduled for June 27.
Mayor Richard Glazebrook had stated earlier that he hoped the city could celebrate the traditional fourth in Sullivan with a parade on Saturday, July 4.
Sim’s indicated Central States Fireworks of Athens has confirmed the evening of Saturday, July 4 for the annual fireworks display at Wyman Park.
Connor Amusements of Beardstown is also still planning to set up in Sullivan the Wednesday prior to the Fourth of July.
The 101st Fourth of July in Sullivan is a major community project brought together by American Legion Post 68, Auxiliary and Sons of American Legion members with the generous support of Sullivan area businesses.

Tractor Cruise Cancelled

The Amish Country Tractor Cruise that was scheduled for June 19 – 20, 2020 has been cancelled for the second time in as many years.
Last year, it was due to weather. This year are the risks and logistics associated with the virus.

Trial Set for Bethany Casey’s Robbery Suspect

Ricky G. Derby, 26, of Sullivan appeared in Moultrie County Circuit Court by videoconference on armed robbery charges.
During the April 20 preliminary hearing Derby and public defender Steve Jones were at the Moultrie County jail with Judge Hugh Finson and States Attorney Tracy Weaver participating via GoToMeeting videoconferencing system.
Derby entered a plea of not guilty and probable cause was found.
A jury trial is set to commence August 3, 2020.
Bethany Chief of Police Chris Nichols issued a press release about the investigation and subsequent arrest.
On the evening of October 18, 2018 at approximately 7:39pm, the Bethany Police Department and the Moultrie Co. Sheriff’s Department responded to the Casey’s General Store in Bethany for a report of an Armed Robbery. Upon arrival, officers and deputies searched the immediate area but were unable to locate the suspect.
The Bethany Police Department began an immediate investigation into the incident. During the course of this lengthy investigation, police were able to identify a suspect, Ricky G. Derby (26) of Sullivan, IL.
A warrant was issued on April 02, 2020 for Derby, charging him with the Armed Robbery. Derby was taken into custody in Jacksonville, Illinois and transported back to the Moultrie Co. jail.
Assisting Bethany PD on this case was Moultrie Co. Sheriffs Department, Sullivan Police Department and Illinois State Police.
All Suspects are considered innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.

Spring concert

On Tuesday, April 28th, under the direction of Dr. Ian Kinkley, Band Director, the Sullivan Band Program presented its symphonious Spring Band concert, titled “Evening Escapes,” which showcased the magnificent and diverse talents of the Sullivan 6th, 7th and 8th grade bands, combined with the Sullivan High School Band and Jazz Band.
