Parking Lot Cookout

The cookout on the Sullivan IGA parking lot Saturday, Sept. 14 for Faith Lutheran Church is a fundraiser for the Ladies Retreat.
Serving is from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. Drop by and have a delicious hot off the grill sandwich. This event is rescheduled from June because of rain.

Bethany Legion Has Gaming

The Bethany American Legion started video gaming operations Friday, Sept. 6 along with the monthly fish fry at the Highway 121 location in Bethany.
American Legion Post 507 now offers four video gaming machines for public operation from 4-10 p.m. Monday through Saturday. The Post is closed Sundays.

Sparrow’s Toy Run is Coming

Sparrow’s Toy Run is Saturday, Sept. 21 with sign in at Rusty’s in LaPlace from 10:30 a.m. to noon.
Signup fee is a new unwrapped toy with all toys given to Lovington area children.
A limited edition T-shirt will be made available to Toy Run participants.
This year’s theme is White Trash: (come dressed in your favorite white trash ensemble…bartenders at each stop will pick a favorite.
Those five stop winners will be judged at the final stop, Jerry’s East End, Lovington, to determine the top prize winner.
There are two free food stops along the route: one is at the third stop-sloppy joes and chips, the second is at the last stop-hot dogs and chips. In addition food will be available for purchase at Wayside.
DJ and slide beer pong is after the run at East End.

Early Labor Day Deadline

Labor Day is Monday, Sept. 2 and the offices of the Moultrie County News Progress will be closed. Deadlines for the Sept 4 News Progress and Sept. 5 Fish Wrap are moved to noon Friday, Sept. 30. Enjoy the holiday and remember Labor built America.

Fall Cruise on The Square

The Sullivan Street Machine Association’s Fall Cruise Night begins at 3:00 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 31 on the square in Sullivan.
All cruisers are welcome with more than $1500 in prizes given away during the event. Live music by Shovelhead. Company sponsors are Wood Insurance and AmBucs.

Free Renaissance Festival Tickets

The St. Louis Renaissance Festival at Rotary Park in Wentzville MO is open weekends Sept. 14 through Oct. 14 and readers of the News Progress can have Free season tickets.

Bethany Alumni Banquet

The Bethany Alumni Association Banquet will be held Sat. October 5, 2019 at the OVHS gymnasium (formerly the BHS gymnasium).
Social hour at 5:00 p.m. dinner at 6:00 p.m. Reservations returned by Tues. Sept. 24 is the cut off date.

SAIL Hosts P.A. Orientation

Soyland Access to Independent Living, SAIL, will hold a Personal Assistant Orientation for people interested in working as a Personal Assistant. Orientation is at 1 p.m.Tuesday, September 24 at Elizabeth Titus Library in Sullivan.
Personal assistants are employed by people with disabilities to perform household chores and personal care tasks in their homes and are paid by the state of Illinois through the Department of Rehabilitation Program.
No reservation is needed to attend the Personal Assistant Orientation, but participants must arrive by 1 p.m. bring their driver’s license or state ID, Social Security card and be prepared to fill out an application with references. SAIL is a fragrance-free facility and those wearing fragrances will not be allowed to attend the orientation.

Senior Expo Returns

Senior Expo is coming to the Sullivan American Legion Friday, Sept. 13 from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Sponsored by Mid-Illinois Senior Services, Inc. the annual event offers a variety of vendors with a free lunch from Griffin’s BBQ Crew Catering, LLC.
State Representative Brad Halbrook and Senator Chapin Rose are sponsoring lunch at 11:30 a.m.
Bingo at 1 p.m. is provided by First Mid-Illinois Bank and Trust of Sullivan.

Congressman Visits Marina

Congressman John Shimkus will visit Lake Shelbyville on August 27th hosted by Sullivan Marina & North End Pub & Grill.
Congressman Shimkus has been made aware of the need to dredging on the north end of the lake. The lake is silting in a far more rapid rate than originally predicted.
Lunch will be served at 1:00 pm followed by guest speakers from Army Corps, Sullivan Tourism, mayor of Sullivan and other state officials. The public will also have a chance to share the importance of Lake Shelbyville to the community.

Spring concert

On Tuesday, April 28th, under the direction of Dr. Ian Kinkley, Band Director, the Sullivan Band Program presented its symphonious Spring Band concert, titled “Evening Escapes,” which showcased the magnificent and diverse talents of the Sullivan 6th, 7th and 8th grade bands, combined with the Sullivan High School Band and Jazz Band.
