Community Band Invites Musicians

Community Band rehearsals beginning May 28 are from 6-7:30 p.m. in the Sullivan HS band room, and concerts are 6:30 p.m. in Wyman Park. First concert is scheduled for Thursday, June 6.

The Sullivan Summer Community Band is preparing to kick off a second season and local musicians are invited to join.
Community band director Shaun Schaefers emphasized the community band is open to incoming ninth-12th grade high school students and adult musicians.
“Last year we had 40 participants with an even mix of student and community members,” Schaefers said.

Blood Drive Hosted By Sullivan Legion

The American Red Cross and The Sullivan Legion will be hosting a blood drive on Tuesday May 14th from 12 noon to 6:00 pm at the Sullivan Legion Post 68.
Donating blood is especially important. All Blood Types are needed. In America, every 2.5 seconds someone needs blood to sustain life. Every unit collected can help up to 3 patients survive.
Any healthy individual, ages 16 and older, who meets weight requirements may donate blood. Donors should eat a healthy meal and drink plenty of water before coming to donate. Donors must have a valid photo ID. Donors can save up to 15 minutes at the drive by using Rapid Pass the day of the drive. Visit redcrossblood.org/RapidPass to complete before the drive.
To make an appointment, please call drive coordinator Jeri Davis at 273-9456. Donors can also make an appointment online by visiting redcrossblood.org Walk ins are welcome, but having an appointment, decreases donor wait time and ensure adequate red cross staffing.

Fireworks Fundraiser

The village of Lovington is holding a fundraiser for the annual fireworks display.
A raffle for quarter of beef (donated by JW Day Farms) is being held .Fireworks Fundraiser Raffle tickets may be purchased at the bank in Lovington, The East End Bar or message the village through the Facebook page – Lovington Fireworks.
The drawing is July 4, and the beef will be ready later this fall.

Author Offers To Speak Locally

Local author Byron Cruit is offering to share thoughts on his writings at local churches and clubs in the area.
Cruit is a 1968 Bethany High School graduate who is originally from Dalton City. Since he began his book in 2016, it has been a labor of love with the inspiration of God.
“My book contains 30 poems with reference to my relationship with God, Jesus Christ and the Holy Spirit as well as personal writings of joy during a 22-year Air Force career,” Cruit said.
Entitled “Drops of Sweetness” the author includes stories about Dalton City, Bethany, Sullivan and Arthur.
He is offering to speak at churches (Sunday School or Bible study), VFW, Rotary, Lions Masonic Lodges and other civic organizations. His father was a 32nd degree Mason of the Bethany Lodge.
Cruit lives in Augusta, Georgia and is planning a visit back home this summer or fall and would like to schedule engagements during that time.

SAMA Hosts IGA Cookout

The Sullivan Area Ministerial Association is hosting a cookout of ribeyes, tenderized pork chops and brats at Sullivan IGA 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturday, May 4.
The fundraiser is to help complete the Nohren home that was dedicated Oct. 13, 2018. Their rental home was completely destroyed by fire Oct. 25, 2017.

Sullivan Townwide Rummage Sales are June 7 & 8

Boy Scouts Annual Cookout is both days on the Sullivan IGA parking lot which is a Townwide Rummage sponsor.
Since 2003 Scout Troop 39 has grown the annual cookout into one of their largest yearly fund raising events.

OVHS Holds Blood Drive

An American Red Cross blood drive will be held 9 a.m.-1 p.m. Monday, April 29 in the Okaw Valley High School gym in Bethany sponsored by the student council. Any healthy individual age 16 through 75 who meets weight requirements may donate blood.
Donors should eat a healthy meal and drink an extra 16 oz. of water and fluids before donating, and they must bring identification showing a picture and a signature.
All blood types are needed, especially Types 0- and 0+. Every 2.5 seconds someone needs blood.
Up to 15 minutes may be saved when blood is donated by using RapidPass. Visit redcrossblood.org/RapidPass for more information.
For more information regarding the blood drive or to make an appointment, contact Okaw Valley High School at 217-665-3631. An appointment may also be made online at www.redcrossblood.org. Walk-ins are also welcome.

Spring concert

On Tuesday, April 28th, under the direction of Dr. Ian Kinkley, Band Director, the Sullivan Band Program presented its symphonious Spring Band concert, titled “Evening Escapes,” which showcased the magnificent and diverse talents of the Sullivan 6th, 7th and 8th grade bands, combined with the Sullivan High School Band and Jazz Band.
