Physicals for Sullivan athletes

Sarah Bush Lincoln will provide sports physicals to athletes from Sullivan schools.

Sports physical clinics will be held from 8:00 a.m. to noon, and from 1:00 to 4:00 p.m. on Wednesday, June 4th, and on Wednesday, August 6th at the SBL Sullivan Clinic, 7 Hawthorne Lane, Sullivan.

“We’re proud to offer these sports physicals as a way to give back to our local schools and support student-athletes,” SBL Vice President of Practice Management Brooke Zerrusen said. “By donating the fee to the schools’ athletic booster clubs, we’re helping strengthen programs that mean so much to our communities.”

The cost is $20 per physical, with all fees being donated to the Sullivan Sports Boosters. Appointments are required and can be made by calling 217-728-8441. For more information, visit https://www.sarahbush.org/sportsphysicals/.

Memorial Car Show Saturday

On May 17th, from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the 4 Star Diner, 1100 Route 121 in Mt. Zion, the annual “Rip Roarin’ Extravaganza” Memorial Car Show will be held. All makes, years, and models are welcome to enter. The entry fee is $15.00, and there will be a 50/50 drawing as well as door prizes awarded (must be present to win). 

This event is in memory of Greg Hostetler (12/15/75-5/13/24), with all proceeds going to Moultrie County first responders.

SAIL holding career event

Soyland Access to Independent Living, SAIL, will hold a Personal Assistant Training for people interested in working as a Personal Assistant on Thursday, May 15th, from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m. at the Shelbyville SAIL office, located at 1604 West Main Street, Suite 100 in Shelbyville. 

Assistants are employed by people with disabilities to perform household chores and personal care tasks in their homes. Personal Assistants are paid for their work by the State of Illinois through the Department of Rehabilitation (DORS) program. A reservation is needed to attend the training.

Church to host Rick King

On Saturday, May 10th, at 6:00 p.m., renowned Gospel singer Rick Allen King will be performing at the Allenville Christian Church, 201 S. Allen Street in Allenville. Rick began his musical journey singing with his mother at age six. Still a young boy of twelve, he started singing professionally and has shared the stage with many leading artists in Gospel Music. SHS May 2025 Baccalaureate

In honor of celebrating the achievements of Sullivan High School’s Class of 2025, the community of Sullivan is invited to attend SHS’s Baccalaureate. This event will be held at Building 1225 on May 4th at 6:00 p.m.

The baccalaureate is a cherished tradition that offers an opportunity for reflection, inspiration, and celebration as Sullivan’s graduates prepare to embark on their next journey. It’s a time to come together as a community to honor their accomplishments and offer our support and best wishes for their futures, whether as a parent, family member, teacher, friend, neighbor, or anyone else who wishes to bless the class of 2025. All attending are valued and appreciated.

Refreshments will be provided, offering a chance to mingle and congratulate our graduating seniors, coming together to celebrate their hard work, dedication, and resilience.

LWWC to host event with focus on mental health

On Tuesday, May 13th, at 6:00 p.m. at the Family Life Center in Lovington, LWWC will be hosting guest speaker Alexandria Poe, LCSW, MSW, MEd, who will discuss the importance of mental health and mental health awareness. Attendees are encouraged to bring a friend. In light of May celebrating Mother’s Day, this will be a great event for mothers and daughters to attend together.

OVHS announces Wolfie Awards

All student-athletes, parents, and community members are invited to attend. The event will be held at Okaw Valley High School, 709 South Saint John St., Bethany.

Blood Drive with ImpactLife

Mid State Tank will host a Community Blood Drive with ImpactLife, the provider of blood components for local hospitals. The blood drive will be from 7:00 am to 12:00 pm on Thursday, May 8th at 1357 Jonathan Creek Road, inside the Donor Bus  

To donate, contact ImpactLife Urbana at (800) 747 5401 or visit www.bloodcenter.org and use code 71293 to locate the drive. Appointments are requested. 

Donor Eligibility Criteria: Potential donors must be at least 17 years of age (16 with parental permission form available through www.bloodcenter.org) and weigh more than 110 pounds. A photo ID is required to donate. For questions about eligibility, please call ImpactLife at (800) 747 5401. Donors who last gave blood on or before 3/13/25 are eligible to give at this drive.  

Blood donation is a safe, simple procedure that takes about 45 minutes to one hour. Individuals with diabetes or controlled high blood pressure may be accepted as eligible donors.

Heritage Woods “Easter Eggstravaganza”

Reminder: Due to inclement weather, Heritage Woods moved their event from last Saturday to this Saturday, April 26th, from 11:00 a.m -3:00 p.m. at 20 Courtyard Blvd., Sullivan. Food trucks Sweetea’z, Eddie’s Taco Truck, Tucker Family Concession, Sweet Vail, and Donut Dollies will be there. Also at the event will be the Sullivan Fire Department, Sullivan PD, MCSD, City of Sullivan, and IDOT. Pony rides, inflatable bounce houses, DJ music, and more. There will also be kids’ bike raffles for ages 0-2, 3-5, 6-8, and 9-11; an adult Easter basket worth $250.00, and a 50/50 raffle. Character visits from Bluey, Elsa, Poppy, Branch, Spiderman, and the Easter Bunny.

Dawkins NEHS submission wows

Mae Dawkins, a Sullivan High School senior and member of the National English Honor Society, was recently informed that she is a national winner of the NEHS Intellectual Freedom Challenge, a prestigious competition that encourages NEHS members to craft compelling arguments defending texts that have faced challenges and bans. Her essay scored among some of the best submissions in the nation by university professors. May was awarded a certificate and a $150 dollar prize.
