Sparrows Annual Toy Run

On September 27th at the Lovington American Legion beginning at 11:00 a.m., Sparrows Unlimited will begin their annual “Toy Run”. They will be leaving promptly at noon. All vehicles are welcome, and the sign-up fee is a new, unwrapped toy for children ages 0-18. The theme this year is “White T-Shirt Lies, with the best white lie winning.

Mid Illinois Senior Services: Bethany Visit

Mid Illinois Senior Services will be in Bethany at the Marrowbone Public Library on September 17th, from 9:00 a.m. until noon, assisting local seniors with the following services: License plate discounts for those that bring in their 2024 tax information and 1099’s (it’s income based); answering Medicare questions and concerns; if you are turning 65 soon, they offer assistance and can answer questions you may have; FOID applications/renewals, and more.

Windsor family Skate Night

Windsor Elementary School’s  PTO will be holding a Skate Night event for Windsor Elementary students and their families on September 6th from 3:30 to 6:00 p.m. at the Silver Skate Center in Mattoon. This event includes free entry and skate rental. Laser tag is $3.00, and both miniature golf and the arcade will be available. Silver Skate is located at 1505 US-45, Mattoon. New History Center writing group

The Moultrie County Historical and Genealogical Society has created a writing group for those who have gathered information on their ancestors and may need a nudge, help on how/where to start, or inspiration. Beginning with their first session on Thursday, September 11th, from 10:30 a.m. until noon at the History Center Library in Sullivan, this group will be getting together to kickstart your writing.

Participants are reminded to bring their laptops and/or notebooks. Encouragement and brainstorming will be provided. The writing group leader will be Jeannie Barnes, and the group will meet on the second Thursday of each month, 10:30 a.m. to noon. For more information, call (217) 728-4085.

Medicare Part D enrollment

Mid-Illinois Senior Services is now scheduling appointments for Medicare Part D enrollments. Open Enrollment is October 15th through December 7th.  During this period, those with Medicare can renew their current prescription drug coverage, compare it with available plans, and possibly save money.

“Big Jim” memorial fishing derby

On Saturday, August 23rd, from 9:00 a.m. until noon at the Woods Lake West entrance (CR 1000 East in Sullivan), the 3rd annual “Big Jim” memorial fishing derby will be held, with the Sullivan AMBUCS Chapter making it possible. This is a free event for children with special needs. Check-in is at 8:30 a.m.

The derby will have ADA/Wheelchair access at the fishing pier, live bait will be available, rods and reels, and food and drinks provided. A new rod and reel will be awarded to the following categories: largest bass, largest crappie, largest catfish, and most fish caught.

“Cruise Night” on the Square

On Saturday, August 30th, the Sullivan Street Machine Association will be celebrating their “Cruise Night” on the Sullivan Square, beginning at 3:00 p.m. All makes, models, and years welcome. Dash plaques for the first 100 registered. The registration fee is $20.00. Over $1,500.00 in door prizes will be awarded at 6:00 p.m., with free popcorn as well. Live music by Shovelhead, and there will be a goodie-bag cruise route. Entree fee is $15.00.

It’s that time of year again - we are asking for readers to submit their favorite recipe for our annual “Family Favorites” cookbook publication. Whether it’s an old family favorite passed down through generations, a recipe you created yourself when being creative, or something new that you love, we are interested in what tickles your palate and brings you joy to put on the table.

The “Family Favorites” cookbook will be published in November.

BASO ‘Car Show’ in Bethany

On Saturday, August 23rd, the 2025 BASO car show will be held in Bethany at Crowder Park from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m., with trophies presented at 6:30 p.m. The entry fee is $15.00, and all makes/models are welcome. There will be a 50/50 raffle, concessions, and dash plaques to the first fifty entries. This will be a participant-judged event, selecting the top 10 and an award for Best in Show.
