Attention Candidates

The Moultrie County News Progress will run a candidate preview section on Wednesday, March 15, 2017.

Candidates may submit a photo, biography and reason for running. This is a free story and photo for candidates participating in the April 4 consolidated election.

Candidates interested in participating may send information to mbrothers@newsprogress.com or call 728-7381 for more information.

This is also an excellent opportunity to finalize advertising for the remaining weeks prior to election.

Lovington Kindergarten Pre-Registration

Preregistration of kindergarten students for the 2017-2018 school year will be held noon-6 p.m. Tuesday, March 7 in the Lovington Grade School office.

Any student who will be five years of age by September 1, 2017 and resides in the Lovington Grade School District is encouraged to attend. Parents are asked to bring the child’s birth certificate to preregistration.

Children in the Lovington preschool program this year need not attend, but the form sent home with your child should be returned to the office.

Voter Registration Deadline

Moultrie County Clerk Georgia England would like to remind residents of Moultrie County that the deadline to register to vote or transfer/change registration for the upcoming April 4 Consolidated Election is Tuesday, March 7. Residents may register to vote at the County Clerk’s office in the Moultrie County Courthouse, second floor in Sullivan from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. Registration is also available at all Moultrie County libraries and with a precinct committee person.

Requirements for registration are:

• Must be a U.S. Citizen.

• Must be at least 18 years of age by election day.

• Must have been a resident of the precinct at least 30 days prior to election day.

• Two forms of identification, one showing registrant’s current address.

Have you moved or changed your name?

A few circumstances in which a person would need to reregister, or change registration are: (1) A person has married or changed their name. (2) A person has moved to Moultrie County from another jurisdiction [county]. (3) A person has moved within the county, even if it is next door, a transfer of registration is required.

Road across Lake Shelbyville dam closed to all traffic

Lake Shelbyville – The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers will close the road across the main dam at Lake Shelbyville to all vehicle and pedestrian traffic on Tuesday, February 28 and Wednesday, March 1, 2017 from 8:00 a.m. until 3:30 p.m. This closure is necessary to provide safety for workers and members of the general public while routine maintenance is performed on the dam. For additional information, contact the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Lake Shelbyville Project Office at (217) 774-3951.

SBL Offers Health Screenings

SBL Lincolnland Home Care and Lincolnland Hospice will conduct a free blood pressure clinic 8:30-9 a.m. on Thursday, March 16 in the Senior Center in Sullivan. For more information, call Lincolnland Home Care at 1-800-879-3212.

SBL Lincolnland Home Care, Lincolnland Hospice and Lincolnland Home Medical will sponsor bingo 9-10 a.m. following the blood pressure clinic.

Sullivan FFA Hosts Petting Zoo

In celebration of National FFA Week, the Sullivan FFA will host the annual FFA Petting Zoo/Open House 9 a.m.-2 p.m. Thursday, February 23 in the Sullivan High School ag classroom and shop.

Scovill Zoo will be on hand from 10 a.m.-1 p.m. to exhibit some of their traveling zoo animals. The public is welcome.

Mo. Co. Spelling Bee Held at The Little Theatre

The 2017 Moultrie County Spelling Bee was held on at 4 p.m. Wednesday, February 15 at the Little Theatre on the Square in Sullivan. Six students from Lovington and six students from Sullivan advanced from their school district spelling bees to participate in the county bee.

The Moultrie County Spelling Bee champion is Aastha Patel of Sullivan. The alternate is Emma Edwards of Lovington.

Sullivan participants were Aarya Patel (fourth), Aastha Patel (seventh) , Reagen Crouse (eighth), Paul Bates (sixth) Nicole Lofland (fifth).

Lovington participants were Marilyn-Jean Hill (fifth), Emma Edwards (sixth), Josie Hale (sixth), Wyatt Hilligoss (sixth), Elizabeth Tighe (seventh) and Colton Middleton (eighth).

Judges for the county spelling bee were Kim Downs  and Jenny Rau, both of Lovington, and Nichole Hendry of Sullivan.

Jane McKown of Lovington served as the pronouncer.

The Regional Spelling Bee is scheduled for Saturday, March18 in Eisenhower High School in Decatur.

Celebrate Agriculture Breakfast

The fourth annual Celebrate Agriculture Breakfast will be held Saturday, March 18 in Atwood.

The breakfast featuring scrambled eggs, biscuits, gravy, sausage, milk, juice, and coffee will be served 7-10 a.m. at United Church of Atwood, located at 210 N. Main Street.

The breakfast is sponsored by the Arthur-Lovington/Atwood-Hammond FFA Alumni Chapter. Donations are encouraged and accepted.

All funds raised help support the agriculture education program and FFA Chapter at ALAH High School.
