Secretary of State Jesse White, in cooperation with Mid-Illinois Senior Services, Inc., is offering a Rules of the Road Review Course for all citizens in the Sullivan area 10-11:30 a.m. Nov. 6 at the senior center located at 114 E.. Jefferson in Sullivan. The course is free to anyone who wishes to attend.
The purpose of the course is to help participants pass the Illinois driver’s license renewal examination. The course prepares applicants for the general written and road examinations and also provides information on the vision screening.

The Illinois Judges Association is putting the focus on lawyer donated legal work by issuing a resolution recognizing October 20-26, as Pro Bono Week. According to IJA President Mary Schostok, “The judges in this state see daily that our citizens have unmet legal needs. Our judges are actively involved in promoting and support equal access to justice through support of the Illinois Supreme Court’s Access to Justice Commission and our efforts to provide education, advice, and representation to meet the increasing need. The Illinois Judges Association is dedicated to encouraging pro bono service and congratulates and thanks these volunteers by issuing this resolution.”
The resolution that was adopted by the officers of the Illinois Judges Association is designed to draw attention to the enormous amount of public service work done in communities throughout Illinois by lawyers and judges to improve the lives of their friends and neighbors. In 2012, more than 30,000 Illinois attorneys provided 2,142,527 hours of pro bono service through services to persons of limited means or the organizations who serve them and through providing training to lawyers who provide the pro bono services. Also, in 2012, Illinois attorneys and judges made monetary contribution to pro bono service organizations totalling nearly $16 million.
The fourth week in October has been designated by the American Bar Association as pro bono week as an effort to showcase pro bono work across the state and the country.
The resolution states “that the Illinois Judges Association recognizes the week of October 20-26, 2013, as Pro Bono Week, commends Illinois attorneys and judges for their ongoing pro bono contributions, and encourages judges to inspire attorneys to engage in pro bono work in order to make a significant difference in the lives of Illinoisans who would not otherwise have access to the legal system; and further urges all Illinoisans to recognize the contribution of the legal community helping those most in need.”
There will be a household hazardous waste collection event held at the Coles County Airport 8 a.m.-3 p.m. October 26.
This collection event is for any Illinois resident. These free collection events don’t happen locally very often, with the last event in Coles County held in 2006.

Courtyard Estates of Sullivan will be hosting its 2nd annual Seniors & Heroes breakfast on Friday October 25 from 8 - 10 a.m. All area seniors are invited to enjoy a complimentary breakfast buffet while visiting with members of the Sullivan Police Department, the Sullivan Fire Department, and the Moultrie County Sheriffs Department. Okaw Valley Community Unit School District invites all veterans and their family members to a Veterans Day program at Okaw Valley High School in Bethany Friday, November 8. A biscuit and gravy breakfast will be provided to all who attend beginning at 8:15 a.m. in the cafeteria, and a short assembly will follow at 9:15am. The assembly will feature the Okaw Valley School District band and chorus students. The keynote speaker at this year’s assembly will be Lou Maxedon, Army veteran.
The students and staff at Okaw Valley thank all veterans for their acts of courage and devotion to the ideals that have served to guide the nation. OV would be honored if any veteran could join them to pay tribute to all the brave men and women who have served the country.

The junior class at Okaw Valley High School invites all first graders through adults to play in a dodge ball tournament Saturday, November 2. The proceeds will benefit prom 2014. The Sullivan AmBuCs will sponsor the annual Halloween parade on Sullivan’s square October 31 beginning at 6 p.m.
The parade is free and open to the public. Those wishing to participate should be at the square by 6 p.m. Every participant will receive a king sized candy bar, and judges will choose seven of the best costumes, with no particular placements given. Each of the seven winners will receive a $20 prize. There will also be no categories for judging costumes. The parade is expected to conclude no later than 6:45 p.m.
The American Legion Post 507 in Bethany will host its third poker tournament fundraiser Saturday, November 16.
The event will benefit students at Okaw Valley High School through academic scholarships awarded annually. The Texas Hold’em poker tournament starts at noon. Fifty seats are available. Pay-outs for a full field will be $425, $350, $275, $225, $175, $125 and $75. Due to charity gaming license restrictions, pay-outs over $250 will be awarded as a Walmart gift card; all others will be cash. All players will be eligible to win door prizes donated by local businesses. Porkburgers and refreshments will be available for purchase at the event. Individuals may also bring his or her own beer. Students in Sullivan are rallying community members to commit to safe driving.
SHS has committed to keeping teens safe on the road, and as such, they are participating in Celebrate My Drive®, a program that’s about celebrating the fun of getting your driver’s license while teaching all drivers positive habits to help avoid car crashes.
The Celebrate My Drive Campaign is a project that the Sullivan FCCLA and FFA are spearheading to make a difference in the community. Not only will it encourage teens to drive safely, but it could also win the school a lot of money. Sullivan FFA and FCCLA already participated as part of the Celebrate My Drive event with a homecoming float in the parade last Friday.
