Hagerman Earns Bronze Tablet Honors

Shelby Hagerman, a 2019 graduate of Okaw Valley High School, has received the highest undergraduate academic honors available at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. Known as “Bronze Tablet” honors, this recognition is given to the top 3% of graduating students. The names of each recipient are inscribed on a bronze tablet that is permanently displayed in the university’s main library, a tradition began in 1925. Shelby graduated May 13th from the U of I’s College of Media with a degree in Media and Cinema Studies, completion of the James Scholar program, and a perfect 4.0 grade point average for all four years. She is the daughter of David and Teresa Hagerman of Sullivan.

Cunnings Named to President’s List

Jeremy Cunnings of Mattoon has been named to Southern New Hampshire University’s Winter 2023 President’s List. The winter terms run from January to May. Full-time undergraduate students who have earned a minimum grade-point average of 3.700 and above for the reporting term are named to the President’s List. Full-time status is achieved by earning 12 credits over each 16-week term or paired 8-week terms grouped in fall, winter/spring, and summer.

Mudd Named to Dean’s List

Christopher Mudd of Mattoon has been named to Southern New Hampshire University’s Winter 2023 Dean’s List. The winter terms run from January to May. Full-time undergraduate students who have earned a minimum grade-point average of 3.500 to 3.699 for the reporting term are named to the Dean’s List. Full-time status is achieved by earning 12 credits over each 16-week term or paired 8-week terms grouped in fall, winter/spring, and summer.

Summer Reading Kickoff

The Elizabeth Titus Memorial Library will host their summer reading kickoff on Friday, May 30 from 10 am to 2 pm. There will be inflatables, sno cones and a craft. That is also the first day of registration for summer reading and prizes will be given if you register at the kickoff party.

Memorial Weekend Cruise In

The Sullivan Street Machine Association will host the Memorial Weekend Cruise In on Saturday, May 27 at 3 pm on the square in Sullivan. There will be a 50/50 drawing and dash plaques. Zoning Board of Appeals Meeting

There will be a Zoning Board of Appeal Hearing on Friday, May 19 at 9 am on the third floor in the courtroom at the Moultrie County Courthouse. This is the meeting that will go into record and is the most important to be heard if the public has something to share in regards to the text amendment to the zoning ordinance as it pertains to wind/solar in Moultrie County for HB 4412.

Take Out Meal Fundraiser

A pork burger and/or hot dog take out meal will be held at the First Christian Church, Sullivan on Sunday, May 21. Serving will be 11 a.m. to 12 p.m. Pull around to the back of the church. Preorders via text is helpful (217) 549-3877. Donations are appreciated to support Sarina Voegel’s Illinois FCCLA State Officer experiences. Voegel is a sophomore at Sullivan High School and has numerous required activities to attend this summer, including the FCCLA National Conference in Denver, Colorado in July. The menu includes Pork Burgers, Hot Dogs, Chips, Dessert & Bottle of Water.

Fred West Benefit

A benefit for Fred West will be held on Saturday, May 20 from 6 to 11 am at the Lovington Firehouse. There will be a biscuit and gravy breakfast, silent auction, bake sale and 50/50 drawing. Fred suffered a massive cerebellum stroke. After having a craniotomy. infection etc. he spent 65 days in the hospital. Fred is home and recovering but still has a long way to go towards recovery. All proceeds will go to the family to assist with expenses.

Retirement Party

A retirement party for Mark Conlin will be held on Friday, May 19th from 5 - 10pm at the Sullivan American Legion to thank Mark and honor his service. Mark has requested a St. Louis Cardinals themed party to kickoff his new found time for games, so don’t forget to best Red Bird apparel. Mark served the City of Sullivan in the electrical department for 34 years.

Clayton Makes the Dean’s List

Dakota Clayton, from Sullivan, was among the students from Lakeview College of Nursing who made the spring Dean’s List. Students who are enrolled in at least 6 credit hours at Lakeview College of Nursing and who achieve a GPA of 3.6 or higher on a 4.0 scale are named to the Dean’s List for the semester. Lakeview College of Nursing offers a bachelor of science in nursing degree. It is a single-purpose, private institution that has specialized in nursing education in the Danville Area since 1894. Lakeview began offering its program in Charleston in the fall of 2001.

Sullivan High School student Claire Kursell recently participated in the Central Illinois High School Art Exhibition at Millikin University. She received an honorable mention for her piece, “Bride of Frankenstein”.
