Bake Sale to Raise Money for Aid in Ukraine

The Sullivan American Legion Auxiliary Unit 68 and The Baking Brigade of Sullivan are holding a bake sale on Friday, March 18, at the Legion to raise money to donate for humanitarian aid in Ukraine. It will be held at the Friday night fish fry held by the Sullivan Sons of the American Legion. Sullivan American Legion Post 68 and SAL are supporting the bake sale. Two area families have connections to Ukraine and we are working with them to select groups to receive donations.

Preschool Roundup in Lovington

Local Students Named to Dean’s List

Students from the area were named to the Blackburn College Dean’s List for the fall 2021 semester. Students named to the Dean’s list must earn a grade point average of 3.6 or higher for the semester. Those named to the list were Kasey Bean and Valerie Corrie, both of Gays; and Shyanne Hunter of Sullivan.

Project H.E.L.P. Preschool Round Up

Project H.E.L.P. and the Sullivan School District will be offering free developmental screenings on Thursday, March 24 and Friday, March 25 at the First United Methodist Church, 216 W. Jefferson Street in Sullivan. These screenings provide parents the opportunity to discover how their child is developing in the areas of speech, language, concepts and motor skills. Vision and hearing screenings will -also be provided, free of charge. Signed parent/guardian permission is required. Screenings are required for possible enrollment in the Project H.E.L.P. preschool classroom. To schedule an appointment call Nicole Monroe at 217-728-8381, ext. 1240.

Andres Achieves Milestone

Lakeview College of Nursing recently held a White Coat Ceremony to recognize students who achieved the transition into clinical practice within their bachelor’s degree nursing program. Toni Andres, of Mattoon, was one of the students who was honored by receiving a white coat. Andres attends Lakeview’s Charleston Campus. About 20 Lakeview students participated in the event that was recently held at the I Hotel and Conference Center in Champaign, IL.

Greenhill Cemetery Cleanup

The City of Sullivan will begin its quarterly cleanup of the Greenhill Cemetery on Monday, March 14, 2022. Residents with surface flowers, wreaths, grave blankets or any other ground surface decorations should remove them by March 13 if they wish to keep them. The cemetery personnel will not pick up any flowers in vases or on the monument unless deteriorated. The cemetery does not have a facility to store unclaimed decorations, so if you wish to keep your items, pick them up by this date. Allow at least one week before replacing ANY items due to the excessive amount of items on various graves. All decorations, flowers and benches must be placed in monument row. No items are allowed to be placed in the middle, foot, bordering or elsewhere on the grave site. Items that are not placed by the rules and regulations will be removed. Questions or concerns call Greenhill Cemetery at 217-728-8043.

Post Prom Seeking Donations

Sullivan High School Post Prom is Saturday, April 23, 2022, at the Sullivan Elementary School from 11:00pm-4:00am and parents of Class of 2023 are in the process of organizing activities. Post Prom is open to all eligible Prom students whether they attend or not. Post Prom committee is asking for monetary donations, gift cards or gift certificates or products from local businesses to be used for activities and prizes at the event. Monetary donations can be mailed to:

Registration for Quilt Show

The Decatur Quilters Guild Quilt Fest will be held on April 8 & 9. If you are a quilter and would like to show your quilts, please join us at this judged show. Registrations for quilts is now open and you may enter your quilt by contacting Rita Ham at 217-972-6629 or visiting the website at www.decaturquiltersguild.com. The show will be Friday and Saturday, April 8 and 9, 2022 at the Decatur Civic Center, downtown Decatur. The Guild will share proceeds from the event with Macon County Historical Museum.

Lorenson Scholarship

The Robert and Leila Lorenson Scholarship is available for graduates of Arthur Lovington Atwood Hammond High School. Applications can be obtained on the ALAH website. April 1 is the deadline for high school graduates and June 1 is the deadline for postsecondary students.

Sullivan FFA Auction

The Sullivan FFA and alumni will hold their annual auction on Saturday, March 5 in the Sullivan High School gym. Complimentary dinner will be served starting at 4:30 pm and a live auction begins at 6 pm.
