In January 1964, Moultrie County was hit by a blizzard with gusting winds of 45 MPH and 8” of snowfall. Pictured above is E. State St. in Lovington looking west. Pictured above was a Lovington home located on S. County, aka route 32. The original 2 lots were purchased in 1894 by Thomas and Priscilla Dawson who purchased them from W. G. Cochran. The Dawsons had a smaller wood frame home on the lots. In Sept 1918, Estelle Dawson, daughter in law of Priscilla, sold the property to Oliver and Linnie (Bailey) Pargeon. They had the old house demo’d and in the May 1919 construction began on this home. Please submit photos to the News Progress for future consideration. Pictured above is Candyland cafe in 1947 after remodeling due to a fire. Owners are Harold and Lois Hayes shown with their staff Wanda Hubbard, Freda Johnson, Irene Balcu, Betty Miller, Ethel Kingery and Leta Pound. The Hayes’ sold the restaurant to Fred Bundy and wife around 1954. The name changed to “The Spot” in 1971 when F.W. Wood bought the restaurant. The Merry Wives Club of Sullivan was originally formed by Mrs. A.E. Cross in 1899 as the Cooking Club. They changed the name of the club in 1901. They have 30 members & met each Thursday afternoon. This photo is dated 1906. Sullivan High School student Claire Kursell recently participated in the Central Illinois High School Art Exhibition at Millikin University. She received an honorable mention for her piece, “Bride of Frankenstein”.
