Facts for Families: A Grateful November Family Activity

Family Life Educator

November is national gratitude month and is a wonderful time to reflect on things you are appreciative of and to be more aware of the goodness around you. Extension Educator Judy Schmidt has written this great article about practicing gratitude in families. Judy says: It seems like in recent years, there has been an increased focus on gratefulness during this month, and we see flurries of social media posts about gratitude. Why such an emphasis on gratitude in recent years? Research shows that practicing gratitude can have dramatic and lasting effects on an individual. Positive effects include physical benefits such as lowered blood pressure, increased immunity and better sleep; as well as mental health benefits such as lower risk for depression and anxiety (Emmons, 2015). I had anticipated getting a phone call or two from readers who interpreted the headline as rubbing their noses in Tuesday’s results. That would have been a stretch, mind you, but emotions run high this time of year.
However, I hadn’t anticipated anyone asking me about word choice in this way: “If we’re talking distance, shouldn’t this be ‘farther,’ not ‘further’?” Tom Petersen wrote. Read More

How to Show Your Support for Veterans

News Progress Posted on November 9, 2022 by webmasterNovember 9, 2022

•November 9, 2022•
Supporting veterans is a worthy endeavor at any time of year, though such efforts tend to be more prominent in November. Veterans Day is celebrated annually on November 11 in honor of the millions of individuals across the United States who are military veterans. The day coincides with holidays such as Armistice Day and Remembrance Day, which are celebrated in other countries and also honor military veterans.
There’s no denying that veterans need the support of the people whose freedoms they protect. According to a 2021 study from researchers at Brown University’s Watson Institute for International and Public Affairs, the percentage of veterans with disabilities is significantly higher among post-9/11 veterans (40 percent) than it was with veterans from previous eras (25 percent for Gulf War I veterans and 13 percent for veterans of previous wars). Veterans can benefit from support legislated by elected officials in Washington, D.C., but there’s also many things ordinary citizens can do to show how much they appreciate the sacrifices veterans and their families have made and will make in the years to come.
