How Small Business Owners can Create an Exit Plan

News Progress Posted on August 31, 2022 by webmasterAugust 31, 2022

•August 31, 2022•
Millions of people across the globe dream of owning their own business. Such dreams come true every day, and small business owners often cite freedom and autonomy as two of the most rewarding parts of owning a business.
Small business owners nearing retirement can look back with pride on the business they built. And as retirement draws closer, a successful exit plan can ensure the business keeps going in the years to come. No two businesses are the same, so an exit plan that works for one firm won’t necessarily work for another. But these are some general strategies that can help small business owners nearing retirement age ensure a successful transition when the time comes for them to call it a career.
· Work with a consultant. Consultants have experience in a variety of situations, including the development and implementation of exit plans. Business owners who need help finding a consultant can speak to fellow small business owners in the community or ask their financial advisor for a recommendation. Read More

Tips for Labor Day Getaways and More

News Progress Posted on August 31, 2022 by webmasterAugust 31, 2022

•August 31, 2022•
Labor Day marks the unofficial end of summer. Even though summer officially ends a few weeks after Labor Day, a new school year begins for most students by Labor Day, and the lazy, hazy days spent on the beach give way to a new school year.
It’s no wonder that so many people want to capture the last of the summer magic before it’s gone for another year; Labor Day getaways help people hold on to summer just a little longer. Explore these tips to make Labor Day trips a bit more safe and convenient.
Leave extra time
Roadways are bound to be busy with other Labor Day weekend travelers, particularly for those headed to seaside locales or campgrounds. One way to avoid some of the traffic is to depart from home in the wee hours of the morning or late at night. Leave plenty of time to get to your destination so you won’t be tempted to speed or drive erratically. Utilize GPS and mobile phone mapping apps to identify routes that can help you avoid traffic. How to Steer Clear of Traffic on Busy Travel Weekends

News Progress Posted on August 31, 2022 by webmasterAugust 31, 2022

•August 31, 2022•
Roadways are undeniably busier during certain times of year. The holiday season might be the first period people think of when imagining crowded roadways, but three-day weekends and popular standalone holidays like the Fourth of July and Canada Day also have a tendency to compel people to get behind the wheel so they can celebrate with their loved ones.
The American Automobile Association (AAA) reports that the Friday before Labor Day was the fifth worst travel day in the United States in 2021. AAA determined its worst travel days by examining data about overcrowded airports and flight delays, but also by looking at how much vehicle traffic was on the nation’s highways. Labor Day weekend is often characterized as the unofficial end of summer, so it should come as no great surprise that the travel data company Arrivalist reports that 43 million people traveled on Labor Day weekend in 2021. Energy Bill Fact Checks Needed after Forum

There was a lot to unpack at Wednesday’s candidate forum which saw Gov. JB Pritzker and his Republican challenger state Sen. Darren Bailey appear on the same stage, albeit at different times, for the first time this campaign season.
For starters, I wrote an article earlier this week fact-checking the governor’s claim that eminent domain language was removed from the final 2021 energy bill known as the Climate and Equitable Jobs Act. That law, which Pritzker signed, contained a provision giving a private transmission line that authority in seven counties.
Now it’s time to fact check his challenger, too. Read More

Facts for Families: Parental Stress

News Progress Posted on August 31, 2022 by webmasterAugust 31, 2022

•August 31, 2022•

Family Life Educator

Extension Educator Tessa Hobbs-Curley wrote this great article about stress levels of parents when school begins. She wrote it in 2019, but I think it deserves to be published again. She says that children returning to school can be such an exciting, busy time. For some parents, it is relieving to get back into a pattern. For others, it can be an overwhelming and stressful time. Parental stress can be triggered by monetary spending on school supplies and registration, balancing extracurricular activities, and worrying that children will adjust to the learning environment well and get along with others. The list could go on forever, right?
So, how do we make our return to school a success for our family? Well, here are a few suggestions: Read More

Things that make newspaper editors groan

News Progress Posted on August 31, 2022 by webmasterAugust 31, 2022

•August 31, 2022•

Editing, unlike eye surgery, is not an exact science.
We all come at things with our own processes, our own perspectives.
Some of us run the spell-checker first, others tinker with ledes first, but many of us give a story a good copy edit first and only then go back to look for holes, imbalance, telegraphed quotes, issues of context, extraneous words, logical flaws, jargon, bias, lack of fairness, lack of appropriateness, poor pronoun usage, lack of continuity, unparallel construction, lack of specificity, disjointedness, embarrassing turns of a phrase, too many long sentences (such as this one) and more.
I could go on for the remainder of this column listing the things we look for that have a tendency to muck up a perfectly good story.
Once we’re done looking for the bad stuff, we focus on the good stuff in a story. No wonder people think we’re Negative Nancys.
We all have different approaches, and we all have different things that absolutely drive us nuts. Read More

Did You Know?

News Progress Posted on August 24, 2022 by webmasterAugust 24, 2022

•August 24, 2022•
Shopping is foremost on the minds of many people come the holiday season. When considering loved ones and acquaintances while making holiday shopping lists, tangible gifts, such as clothing or items for the home, may be the first things that come to mind. However, experiential gifts also merit consideration. Experiential gifts are those that focus on experiences rather than items. These can include anything from a horseback riding adventure to a spa day to concert tickets to getting behind the wheel of a race car. Experiential gifts can be tailored to people’s interests. A 2014 study by researchers at San Francisco State University showed people tend to realize greater well-being from life experiences and consider them to be a better way to spend their money. Overall satisfaction tends to be greater with gifted experiences than with material things. Furthermore, the Harris Group found that 72 percent of millennials actually want to spend more money on experiences rather than things. GG229230

On Route 133 between Lovington and Arthur, power poles fell as a result of the storm systems that hit central Illinois in two waves on Wednesday, June 17th. These storms left many without power and caused widespread damage throughout the area, including confirmed tornado touchdowns in nearby counties.
