Flying flags for heroes
On Sunday, February 27, a ceremony was held at the monument at the Sullivan American Legion Post 68. It was the laying of a wreath to honor our fallen heroes. Participating were the American Legion Honor Guard, the Sons of the American Legion and the Ladies Auxiliary. The name of the program is Flying Flags for Heroes. The purpose of the program is to lay a million flags at veteran’s graves this year. Please keep a veteran family member or friend in your thoughts and prayers.

Sullivan Chamber Hosts Member Luncheon
The Sullivan Chamber and Economic Development hosted a member luncheon at the Sullivan American Legion Post 68 on Tuesday, March 29. This was the first luncheon they have had since 2020 due to the pandemic. Pictured is guest speaker Cassie Yoder, owner of Cass Concepts who spoke on social media.

SMS National English Honor Society Induction

Sullivan Middle School’s National English Honor Society had their induction on Tuesday, March 29, in the SHS Commons. 27 middle school students were inducted to participate in this pilot program.
Tara Bates, the SMS NEHS Chapter Adviser explained that Sullivan is one of only 3 schools in the U.S. to have the honor of piloting this program (the other 2 being in New York and New Jersey). Sullivan was provided this opportunity in part because of the success and dedication of the SHS Chapter. Read More

Spring into Gardening Raises $3,200 for Master Gardener programs

The recent 12th annual Spring into Gardening event raised $3,200 for workshops and other community learning opportunities offered by the University of Illinois Extension Master Gardeners.
Nearly 70 participants attended the event that the Master Gardeners of Coles, Cumberland, Douglas, Moultrie and Shelby counties held on March 5 at Broadway Christian Church, 1205 S. Ninth St., in Mattoon. Read More

Understand the Science Behind Being Healthy

Understanding the science of chronic disease can guide individuals to a healthier life. University of Illinois Extension, in collaboration with the Interdisciplinary Health Sciences Institute, will present a series of free, online health workshops.

OV Native Receives Prestigious Nursing Honor

Moranda Matheson, RN, recently received the D.A.I.S.Y award at Riverside Healthcare in Kankakee. The award recognizes the exceptional, skillful and compassionate care that nurses demonstrate for patients and families every day.

Vice President and Chief Nursing Officer LaTivia Carr, along with Riverside President and CEO Phil Kambic were recently on hand to recognize a recent D.A.I.S.Y. award recipient, Moranda Matheson, RN from I.M.C.U. at Riverside Healthcare in Kankakee IL.
The nomination received was submitted by the family of a patient cared for by nurse Matheson and read: On January 7th, 2022, around 7:35 p.m. I called the step-down I.C.U. to get an update on my mother, who was being treated for COVID pneumonia. Charge Nurse Moranda Matheson answered my call. Nurse Matheson spoke to me for 30 minutes or more, answering all of my questions in detail with kindness and sympathy, never once rushing to get off the phone. After my questions were answered, Nurse Matheson asked when was the last time I spoke to my mom. Read More

Apprenticeship Expansion Grant Awarded to LLC

As the fiscal agent to LWIA 23, Lake Land College has been awarded $98,480 for the Apprenticeship Expansion Grant from the Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity. The grant funds will be used to hire an apprenticeship navigator for all of Economic Development Region 7. Apprenticeship navigators are an essential component to the apprenticeship Illinois framework as they work directly with businesses to cultivate and launch new US Department of Labor-registered apprenticeships. The Moultrie-Douglas County Fair Pageant will be held Monday, July 27th at 6:00 p.m. for Little Miss Fair Queen and 7:00 p.m. for Miss and Junior Miss Fair Queen located at the south track on the Mo-Do Fairgrounds. Vying for the title of Miss Moultrie Douglas Fair Queen are: Abigail Meyer of Tuscola, Addee Mulligan of Arcola, Sarah Rogers of Atwood, Ava Whitson of Tuscola, Addisyn Wilson of Villa Grove, Emma Spillman of Tuscola, Aymara Leal of Arcola and Katilyn Kirby of Sullivan.
