Theresa Pawlicki tells me she is 78 years old and has a daughter who is a stickler about proper English, so she lives in mild fear of saying the wrong thing.
But that’s not why Theresa wrote to me.
“I have to tell you the one phrase I hear so much today that is extremely irritating is ‘No problem!’ I assume it’s meant to take the place of ‘Thank you,’” she wrote. “When I hear it, it brings chills to me and it is insulting. It’s easier to say ‘Thank you’ as it’s only two syllables where ‘No problem’ is three.”

The summer between high school graduation and freshman year of college is cause for excitement and a feeling of pride. There are many celebratory events to attend and possibly even a college orientation. While it is a milestone that is filled with enthusiasm, it can also take a toll on the student’s mental well-being especially if they are going away to school later that summer.
Extension Educator Veronica Aranda has written this article that I wanted to share with you in preparation for your child leaving for college. Veronica says: Leaving home for the first time requires students to take on added responsibilities and make decisions for themselves. While the thought of moving away might excite them, sharing a room with a stranger or even a friend or acquaintance will bring about an array of challenges that they will need to learn to resolve. Coles County Man Sentenced

Alexander Fritz, 25, of Charleston has been sentenced to 10 years of imprisonment in the Illinois Department of Corrections.
At a hearing July 23, Judge Gary Webber accepted a plea in which Fritz pled guilty to the offense of armed violence, a Class X Felony, Moultrie County case 21-CF-37. Read More

More than 1.5 million students reached Secretary of State and State Librarian Jesse White has awarded over $1.4 million in FY21 School District Library Grant Program awards to 649 public school districts. The Sullivan Health Care Center was giving its elderly residents’ spirits a lift, with the aid of wings. The Health Care Center had added a Living Design Inc. aviary to the facility. The six food by eight foot aviary included 14 birds--two blue doves, a number of finches and a single canary. The facility raised $500 from a rummage sale to pay for the amenity, as well as other revenues from the sale of candy bars.
Justine Brewer took over and expanded Bethany’s downtown video store. Newly dubbed Tapes & Tans, the store featured not only more than 700 video tapes for rent but also a 20-minute tanning bed. Read More
