Resilience. Strength. Triumph. Kindness. Hope. Perseverance. Courage. All of these words describe Marion Blumenthal Lazan, a Holocaust survivor, who gave a Zoom presentation to Sullivan Middle and High School students May 13. Her presentation was sponsored by a grant awarded to SHS English teachers Becky Lawson, Cami Badman, and Becca Stinebring by the Sullivan Community Education Foundation.
“Marion’s compassion and strength came through strongly even though she was almost a thousand miles away at her home in New York,” stated Becky Lawson, who noted that an in-person visit had been funded by the foundation last year but did not take place because of COVID.
Middle school history teacher Caiden Webb noted that he had several students who were “glued to the screen the entire time she spoke.” Read More

Lovington High School hosted three foreign exchange students and Sullivan High School had one. They were Ben Dieplinger, Pablo Lainez, Michael Seifert, Cecile Agullo.
The Sullivan City Council approved an economic incentive agreement to return a portion of any retail sales tax generated by Hydro-Gear to the company. As of yet, Hydro-Gear generated no retail sales, but that might change given the addition of one or two associated companies, Mayor Leon Lane explained. The deal was similar to the city’s Tax Increment Financing arrangement with Hydro-Gear, which rebated a portion of property taxes generated by Hydro-Gear. Read More

Sullivan First Graders Visit Ballard Nature Center
First grade students visited Ballard Nature Center recently for their end-of-the-year field trip. They took a nature walk, learned about pond life, and enjoyed time outdoors. This was a great way to celebrate their school year in-person. Many thanks to the Daniel and Ida Rice Foundation, Independence Tube Corporation, Grohne Family Foundation, Illinois Department of Natural Resources, and the Illinois Conservation Foundation for providing the opportunity to visit Ballard.

I would like to share this recent article by Extension Educator Jenna Smith. The recipe sounds so good, I’ll have to try it! Jenna says: spring has arrived, and the sun is starting to stay out longer. This may not only make us happier, but it may also make us healthier. Our bodies make vitamin D, known as the “sunshine vitamin”, when the natural light hits our skin. Vitamin D promotes the absorption of calcium and phosphorous and helps deposit these two minerals in bones and teeth making them stronger. Research suggests that vitamin D may not only be good for bone health, but also for other diseases, including heart disease and different types of cancers. Read More

Sullivan Rotary Helps Moultrie County C.E.F.S. With New Freezer
The Sullivan Rotary Club recently sought a grant to help one of their community partners with a need. Since C.E.F.S. does so much for the community, the Rotary Club of Sullivan donated a huge new freezer to replace a faulty one that could not be used to full capacity and leaked water. Allison Garrett, Outreach Coordinator at Moultrie County C.E.F.S. came to visit Rotary to thank them personally. Pictured are Allison Garrett, Outreach Coordinator at Moultrie County C.E.F.S., Stan Parks, Club Secretary; Susan Rauch, Club Treasurer; and George Levi, Club President.
