Can I Travel After Getting the COVID-19 Vaccine?

News Progress Posted on April 28, 2021 by webmasterApril 28, 2021

•April 28, 2021•
It is that time of year when many people are looking forward to their summer vacation plans. However, people may be wondering if this is finally a time when they can travel with minimal health risks, or if they may have to postpone adventures once again, just as they did last summer, when the global pandemic was still raging?
Though social distancing, sanitation and crowd limits press on this year, a few things have changed since last summer. After a year of living in a pandemic, doctors and the public in general have learned what is working and what is not in regard to managing surges and avoiding a rush on hospitals and health centers. In addition, at press time, various effective COVID-19 vaccines have been administered to millions of people, and another is potentially on the horizon. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, these vaccines are effective at protecting people from getting seriously sick. People who have been fully vaccinated can start to do some things they ceased doing because of the pandemic. Many may wonder if that means traveling. Read More

That’s All I Have To Say About ‘That’

A co-worker who fancies himself a gastronome posted a photo and description of his dinner the other night on Facebook.
The heart of his meal was a “rib-eye marinaded overnight in 2tbsp olive oil, fresh garlic, oregano, salt and pepper, finished with butter on the grill.”
Sounds scrumptious, but one of our copy editors posted: “Mmmmm, marinated steak.”
I inquired whether use of “marinated” was a passive-aggressive spelling correction.
Her response: “Nope. I love marinated steak and steak with marinade equally.”
So diplomatic. She clearly won that battle of quips.
It should be noted “marinade” traditionally was a noun and “marinate” the verb form, but in the past decade or so “marinade” has been gaining acceptance as a verb. Read More

A Perfect Match: Cinco de Mayo Meets ‘Taco Tuesday’

News Progress Posted on April 28, 2021 by webmasterApril 28, 2021

•April 28, 2021•
Cinco de Mayo gives people an opportunity to celebrate Mexican culture, throw a party, or at the very least, go out and indulge in Mexican food.
Cinco de Mayo is mistakenly believed to honor Mexican independence, but Mexico actually celebrates its independence in September. Cinco de Mayo commemorates the Mexican army’s victory over French forces at the Battle of Puebla under the leadership of General Ignacio Zaragoza during the Franco-Mexican war. A relatively minor holiday in Mexico, Cinco de Mayo has nonetheless become a global phenomenon.
Cinco de Mayo falls on a Tuesday this year. That means Cinco de Mayo coordinates perfectly with the observance of “Taco Tuesday®.” For the past 30 years, the “Taco Tuesday” trademark has belonged to Taco John’s, a Wyoming-based fast-food chain. However, the Taco Tuesday phenomenon has spread, and now Taco Tuesday is a weekly occurrence across the country, and a big marketing opportunity for many regional restaurants - not to mention a perfect chance for families to gather around the dinner table to enjoy some tacos. The Basics of Lyme Disease

News Progress Posted on April 28, 2021 by webmasterApril 28, 2021

•April 28, 2021•
Lyme disease poses a threat to millions of people across the globe. The misconception that Lyme disease is exclusive to the United States, and the northeastern portion of the country in particular, is understandable. Hundreds of thousands of people in the U.S. are diagnosed with Lyme disease each year, but the 2017 U.S. Geological Survey found that 95 percent of those cases are in the northeast, mid-Atlantic or northern midwest regions. In spite of that, no one is immune to Lyme disease, regardless of where they live.
The World Health Organization notes that, in addition to the United States, there are foci of Lyme borreliosis in forested areas of Asian and in northwestern, central and eastern Europe, proving that Lyme disease is a global issue. With that in mind, it behooves everyone to take steps to understand Lyme disease and how to reduce their risk of getting it.

Is It That That That Was One Too Many?

There you have me repeating myself again.
Readers Mike and Gayle Politowicz feel (that) I am a serial abuser of “that.”
That is to say the word “that,” not this or that.
“Please help explain the word ‘that,’ which has us perplexed,” they wrote. “It is an overused word and if removed, most of the time, it would not change the intent of the sentence.”
They went on to explain (that) in a recent column — about “because” — I used “that” 17 times, and in eight of those cases it could have been eliminated without affecting the meaning of the sentence.
“The rest of the article could have used alternate words such as ‘which,’ ‘it,’ ‘the,’ or ‘this,’ for that matter,” the Politowiczes wrote. “If the word ‘because’ is disappearing, let’s do away with the redundant use of ‘that’ and we can all save some keystrokes.”
I should note Mike and Gayle’s criticism came wrapped in a compliment. I’m sure they appreciate I mentioned so and I eliminated three “thats” I ordinarily would have put in this paragraph. Read More

These storms left many without power and caused widespread damage throughout the area, including confirmed tornado touchdowns in nearby counties.
