Dear Editor,

I appreciate that Sullivan City Council conceded 3 misconceptions regarding high utility rates. The concessions include the following: 1) that the homeowner is somehow responsible for the excessive rates charged in Sullivan, 2) that Sullivan’s utility rates are comparable to surrounding communities, and 3) Ameren add-ons make it difficult to compare Sullivan’s utility rates to those of surrounding communities.
Regardless how energy efficient the house, Sullivan residents paid $0.14/kWh in Feb. 2021. Residents in Lovington paid $0.07/kWh, and Arthur and Findlay residents paid $0.09/kWh. So, why fuss about pennies? Read More

Kathy says: every year people gather up all their tax documents, organize them and then think about their options: do their income tax filing themselves, pay someone else do it, or find another option! Today, let’s explore these options.

When Including That Extra Comma is Essential

I view Oxford comma afficionados as belt-and-suspenders people.
They’ll tell you how adding a comma after the penultimate item in a list is how it’s done in literature and how it provides clarity (using it even when it doesn’t add clarity).
It’s there, you know, just in case.
Perhaps I just like to live dangerously. After all, I haven’t worn a belt or suspenders in more than a year now, because the elastic waistband on my business casual sweatpants fulfills the mission.
Newspapers generally eschew the Oxford comma as vestigial, but we’re not above using it when it adds clarity to a sentence. What kind of clarity? When it creates an undeniable separation between the final two items.
There are probably as many arcane justifications for the Oxford comma’s use as for its omission. Read More

Jeri Davis and Jamie Miller of Sullivan are concerned about those driving around the school bus at a bus stop on Highway 121 in Sullivan. So much so that Davis put up signs near the stop last week hoping drivers will think twice before breaking the law.
“People pass the bus when it has red flashing lights, and when the yellow warning lights are on as well, while my grandchildren are getting on the bus,” Davis reported. It is illegal to pass a stopped school bus.
She has had three signs made and placed them on the side of the road near the stop. They read, “Flashing yellow on school bus CAUTION prepare to stop”, “Flashing red on school bus STOP!” and “Student fatality at this bus stop! Drive safely.” Read More
