Remember When? 12-30-2020

News Progress Posted on December 30, 2020 by webmasterDecember 29, 2020

25 Years Ago This Week

The city of Sullivan and the surrounding area was paralyzed by a dangerous snow storm. Seven or more inches of snow has fallen to the ground on top of what was left from the snowstorm which hit the week before Christmas. The snow, combined with brisk winds, has left people stranded in the country and in town.
The initial fundraising campaign of the recently formed Sullivan Community Education Foundation is off to a very strong start. Despite having been kicked off only a few weeks ago, the Charter Donor Campaign has been receiving a steady stream of cash contributions and pledges. Read More

Comma, Comma, Comma, Comma Comma Chameleon

When you’re in the mood for a little grammatical navel-gazing, it’s fun to consider how the smallest things can have a large impact.
Let’s focus today on the comma.
Commas wear many colors and can do many things. There, did I justify my anachronistic headline?

Attribution
I often admonish writers to include a second comma when putting attribution in the middle of a sentence. Without it, the sentence can change meaning.
For instance: If you stand on your head and drink a grape Nehi, Bob said, you will get stomach cramps.
This sentence is properly attributed to Bob, with commas wrapped around the attribution. Bob is describing the stomach cramps one will get as a result of drinking soda while standing on his head. Read More

How to Avoid Foggy Eyeglasses

News Progress Posted on December 23, 2020 by webmasterDecember 23, 2020

•December 23, 2020•
Billions of people across the globe need eyeglasses to drive a car, read a book, watch television, and perform a host of other tasks of daily life.
Although glasses are highly effective, people who wear them understand they may have to make a few concessions while doing so. Unlike contact lenses, which sit directly on the eye, glasses rest on the bridge of the nose. They may slightly impede peripheral vision or even slip down if not properly fitted. Those accustomed to wearing glasses in the cold weather understand fogging of the lenses is a nuisance they may be forced to confront. That nuisance became even more profound when masks became a must-have accessory to help curb the spread of the COVID-19 virus. Read More

Gov. JB Pritzker announced Friday that more than 17,000 doses of the first coronavirus vaccine have been administered to Illinois frontline health care workers outside of Chicago, up from 3,500 doses on Thursday.
Pritzker said Illinois hospitals could begin to receive shipments of a second COVID-19 vaccine, developed by the drug company Moderna, as early as next week. That announcement comes one day after the U.S. Food and Drug Administration’s advisory committee recommended the use of the Moderna vaccine in people ages 18 and older. The FDA on Friday evening granted Emergency Use Authorization for the Moderna vaccine.
The first vaccine, developed by Pfizer and BioNTech, received such authorization from the FDA last week. Read More

Is There a Dr. in the White House?

I’m sure you’ve been wondering where I fall on the whole Dr. Jill Biden kerfuffle.
I chose “kerfuffle” over “controversy” because it pairs so nicely with “malarkey.”
This issue caught fire a week ago when a regular contributor to The Wall Street Journal wrote an op-ed that suggests the first lady-to-be drop the “Dr.” title.
This elicited grenade-lobbing from various people and publications, even the Bidens.
Jill Biden has a doctorate in education. She went to grad school, she wrote a doctoral thesis, she earned her degree.
Joseph Epstein wrote his snarky op-ed in which he said the honorific is a “not unimportant matter.”
What a bunch of malarkey. Read More

2020 Moultrie County Tentative Multiplier Announced

News Progress Posted on December 23, 2020 by webmasterDecember 23, 2020

•December 23, 2020•
Moultrie County has been issued a tentative property assessment equalization factor of 1.0000, according to David Harris, Director of Illinois Department of Revenue.
The property assessment equalization factor, often called the “multiplier”, is the method used to achieve uniform property assessments among counties, as required by law. This equalization is particularly important because some of the state’s 6,600 local taxing districts overlap into two or more counties (e.g. school districts, junior college districts, fire protection districts). If there were no equalization among counties, substantial inequities among taxpayers with comparable properties would result. Read More
