Remember When? 11-11-2020

News Progress Posted on November 11, 2020 by webmasterNovember 11, 2020

25 Years Ago This Week

The Dalton City Christian Church will mark its 130th anniversary with an open house. Extensive remodeling of the sanctuary will be unveiled and a dedication ceremony will be held based on the dedication ceremony used when the present church was dedicated in 1956. The present church building is the third to stand in the same location. The first church, one of the oldest buildings in Moultrie County burned down in the 1920s. It was replaced by a brick church which also burned down in the 1950s. The present building was erected in 1956, and the steeple was added in the 1980s. The remodeled sanctuary is the first major renovation the church has had since 1978.
On a cold, blustery day, the Redskins bid to warm the hearts of the faithful fell short in their IHSA Class 2A quarterfinal game with Central A&M. Luke Tillman’s fourth quarter touchdown broke a scoreless tie, and the Raider defense handled the rest as Central advanced with an 8-2 victory ending the Redskins’ season. Read More

Graduated Tax Fails; Cuts, Tax Hikes or Both Could Follow

News Progress Posted on November 11, 2020 by webmasterNovember 11, 2020

•November 11, 2020•
By Capitol News Illinois

Backers of a graduated income tax constitutional amendment conceded defeat Wednesday, Nov. 4, for Gov. JB Pritzker’s marquee policy proposal which was projected to bring in more than $3 billion annually to state coffers.
With 98 percent of precincts reporting, voters had rejected the amendment by a 55 percent to 45 percent margin. The Associated Press called the race for the “No” camp, as a large number of outstanding mail ballots were almost certainly not enough to make up for the deficit of approximately 500,000 votes.
In his daily COVID-19 briefing in Chicago, an agitated Pritzker lashed out against the Republican Party, warned of cuts to public safety and human services and said several other options were on the table for addressing state budget deficits that have been ongoing for decades.
“Illinois’ fiscal problems haven’t gone away. We now sit at a crossroads,” Pritzker said. “Our state finances still require fundamental structural change. In the coming days I’ll be talking with the leaders in the General Assembly about our path forward. But here’s what we know for sure: I promised to be a governor who balances the budget and pays the bills that my predecessor left behind. I promised to make sure that our kids get a good education that we invest in job creation and that we build a better future for Illinois. There will be cuts, and they will be painful.” Read More

As part of the grant, Millikin’s Human Trafficking Research Lab, founded by Dr. Laura Dean, associate professor of political science, will research and facilitate data collection and provide a community assessment of anti-trafficking task force activities.
The research lab, which includes two undergraduate research assistants, will conduct a community assessment of the Central Illinois Human Trafficking Task Force to determine the characteristics of human trafficking in central Illinois, and demonstrate how the data can be used to strengthen and combat trends in the region.
