As Illinois leaders work on solutions, ROE #11 Regional Superintendent Kyle Thompson is teaming with area legislators to make the path to becoming a teacher easier.
Thompson believes one barrier that should be removed is the relatively new edTPA.
Short for Education Teacher Performance Assessment, the edTPA was written into the Illinois School Code in 2015.  It requires student teachers to complete a series of arduous tasks while they are student teaching, most notably videotaping themselves while teaching in the classroom.  Upon completion, the student teachers are required to submit their evidence to Pearson, a third-party evaluator. The 2018 Farm Bill legalized hemp and its derivatives (cannabis) in 21 states, including Illinois. Under the Bill hemp farmers will be eligible for a new crop insurance pilot program as well as loans. Veterans in Illinois can now use loans from the G.I. Bill to start hemp farms.
Industrial hemp growing in the U.S. has been stymied for years because of the perception of hemp as marijuana. They are, in fact, different strains of the same species with hemp having far less THC. That can all change now with the legalization of cannabis in Illinois.
I see hemp as a viable and more easily marketable crop for Illinois farmers. Read More

The outstanding academic achievements of undergraduate students at the University of Tennessee at Martin have been honored with publication of the Fall 2019 Chancellor’s Honor Rolls for the College of Agriculture and Applied Sciences, College of Business and Global Affairs, College of Education, Health, and Behavioral Sciences, College of Engineering and Natural Sciences and the College of Humanities and Fine Arts. 25 Years Ago This Week

The Sullivan High School Signal and the News Progress have received an “Exemplary Partnership” award from the Illinois State Council on Business Education Partnerships.
News Progress publisher Marion Best and Signal Advisor Rebecca Lawson traveled to Chicago to accept the award along with Sullivan Signal Alumni Charley LeCrone and Jodi England, who were both past editors of the high school newspaper.
Amid fiery comments and bitter exchanges the Bethany School Board tabled the issue of consolidation with the Sullivan School District. Board members Carol Gregory, Steve Funk and Paul Snyder voted no with members Dick Lamb, Paul Roney, Dave McCabe and Norma Farris voting yes.
