By Ted Walk,
Supt. Sullivan CUSD #300

When I first started teaching in the Sullivan School District, I found it a little odd that our schools were in session on Veteran’s Day.
I understood why we were in session much better after I was able to witness the Veteran’s Day Celebration at Sullivan Elementary School.
I would rank our students’ and teachers’ demonstration of their appreciation of those who have served our country among the highest of schools everywhere. In the weeks preceding Veteran’s Day, students and teachers share examples with their classes of members of their family who are serving or have served in the military. Read More

Karen R., a 70-year-old Medicare beneficiary living in a mid-size town in Indiana, contacted me recently about her Part D drug coverage. She and her husband both have traditional Medicare, a Medigap policy, and what’s called a stand-alone plan for their drugs. For a long time, her stand-alone plan offered through Humana worked well for them. Her out-of-pocket costs for most drugs was only $8.
This summer Karen, who takes 11 drugs for a variety of illnesses, including atrial fibrillation and kidney disease, was diagnosed with a new ailment – psoraisis.
Not only did the diagnosis catch her off guard but so did the high price tag for Otezla, one of the newer drugs for treating this ailment. It was the only psoriasis drug that worked well with other medications she was taking.
Karen and other seniors are discovering that some of these new drugs come with hefty price tags. Read More

Poppies to honor those who gave all

News Progress

On Friday, May 22nd, Ruth Keown, Vice-President of the Sullivan American Legion Auxiliary Unit 68, greeted the public at the entrance to the local Post Office, distributing Memorial Poppies. Each year, millions of Americans wear these Memorial Poppies in memory of American service members who lost their lives in war while serving their country, and to assist those Veterans who are now hospitalized or in rehabilitation, suffering from wounds and illnesses. Memorial Day poppies distributed by the American Legion symbolize the ultimate sacrifice made by service members and are a tribute to those who lost their lives in war. Wearing the poppy is a way to honor the fallen and ensure their bravery is never forgotten.
