Sullivan Schools are fortunate to be able to provide a myriad of opportunities for our students to prepare themselves for their future.
This week I would like to highlight our welding program. We currently have 15 students enrolled in our Dual-Credit welding program at Sullivan High School through a partnership with Lake Land College.
In this course, our students have access to both a Lake Land instructor as well as our own Industrial Arts teacher. Throughout this course our students learn a number of basic welds that will help them fill jobs within our region. Read More

Banishing Domestic Violence from the Shadows Can Help

News Progress Posted on October 17, 2018 by webmasterOctober 17, 2018

•October 17, 2018•

By Mary Hughes
Mo.Co. Dove Coordinator

October is National Domestic Violence Awareness Month. Join us as we stand with victims, celebrate with survivors and honor those who work to end the abuse. The Dove, Inc. Candlelight Service will be held at the Sullivan United Methodist Church at 7 p.m. Thursday, October 25.
Nearly one in three women and one in four men will experience domestic violence in their lifetimes. It’s simply too big a problem to stay quiet about. So, as we observe Domestic Violence Awareness Month, it’s vital that we spark an honest and candid dialog. The only way we can unite domestic violence perpetrators, survivors, researchers and service providers to create a world free from domestic violence is if we banish it from the shadows. Read More

News Progress Posted on October 17, 2018 by webmasterOctober 17, 2018

25 Years Ago This Week

The 1993 soybean crop in Moultrie County shows signs of being a “bin buster” with yields of early beans exceeding 50 bushels an acre according to Sullivan Grain. A photo shows beans on the Melvin Wiley farm that were testing under 11.8 percent moisture.
When the pumpkin crop comes in, things get busy at Spencers’ produce. The farm, located south of Sullivan, owned by Clarence and Phyllis Spencer has been operating at its current location since 1975. Pumpkins at Spencers’ come in all shapes and sizes, and if you want, a variety of decorations thanks to the artistic flair of their daughter, Beth Cole. Cole has spent many hours transforming pumpkins and gourds into witches, ghosts, and other inspirations to sell to customers. Read More

It’s Flu Shot Time: New Flu Vaccine-Nasal Spray Option Available

News Progress Posted on October 17, 2018 by webmasterOctober 17, 2018

•October 17, 2018•

As soon as the influenza (flu) vaccine is available in your community, the Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH) recommends everyone six months and older be vaccinated. The nasal spray flu vaccine is once again a recommended option for influenza vaccination. During the past two flu seasons, the nasal spray was not recommended due to concern about its effectiveness.
“It takes about two weeks after vaccination for antibodies that protect against flu to develop in the body,” said IDPH Director Nirav D. Shah, M.D., J.D. “The flu season typically starts around October so we recommend you make plans to get vaccinated now, before flu season begins.” Read More

SES Gold Slip Students

News Progress Posted on October 17, 2018 by webmasterOctober 17, 2018

SES Gold Slip Students
Each month, Sullivan Elementary School recognizes students who go above and beyond expectations by awarding them “Gold Slips.” Pictured are the students (from left to right) who were awarded Gold Slips for the months of August and September: Kayla Kenney always makes a point to find students with no one to play with and then plays with them.
Levi Risley and Gracelynn Dovell are always very respectful and set a great example for others.
Lorelei Parker respectfully accepted a student’s apology after being disrespected by them. She even wrote them a letter to accept their apology and gave them suggestions on how to treat one another.
Weslee Allen was walking with a friend and his little sister after school when the friend realized he forgot his take-home folder in the classroom. Wes volunteered to run back to the classroom and get it so his friend didn’t have to leave his sister.
Daisy Richardson volunteered to help a student who was struggling to keep his binder organized. She gave up her entire recess to work with him to get everything in order and even took time to teach him helpful tips for staying on task and organized.
Lily Betts has picked up trash (with latex gloves on) all week from the playground. She has done this on her recess time without being asked.

Poppies to honor those who gave all

News Progress

On Friday, May 22nd, Ruth Keown, Vice-President of the Sullivan American Legion Auxiliary Unit 68, greeted the public at the entrance to the local Post Office, distributing Memorial Poppies. Each year, millions of Americans wear these Memorial Poppies in memory of American service members who lost their lives in war while serving their country, and to assist those Veterans who are now hospitalized or in rehabilitation, suffering from wounds and illnesses. Memorial Day poppies distributed by the American Legion symbolize the ultimate sacrifice made by service members and are a tribute to those who lost their lives in war. Wearing the poppy is a way to honor the fallen and ensure their bravery is never forgotten.
