Illinois State Police Conduct Roadside Safety Check in Moultrie County

Remember When June 22, 1992

Initiated with a grant awarded Powers Elementary School and implemented through the Douglas-Moultrie Rural Health Outreach Project a program to assist parents to prepare children from birth through age five began in area schools. Goal of the program is to help children be developmentally prepared to start school ready to learn.

The “Return of Almost Anything Goes” returned to the football field in Lovington during the annual Kiwanis Club fish fry. “Anything Goes” teams from Arthur, Bethany, Sullivan and Lovington competed in a variety of events including pushing eggs with noses, cross country football field skiing, and forming a human caterpillar. The Lovington team included Rick Boddy, Carl Watkins, Beverly Powell, Darletta England, Steve Mechling, Heather Fisher, Mike Edwards, Tony Brown, Angie White and Kevin Franklin. It was coached by Tracy Garmon.

Bethany schools increased lunch prices by five cents and book rental fees by $2.50 following a recommendation by Supt. Steve Mitchell. He noted losses in the lunch program and increased textbook prices led to the action. Read More

Sullivan FFA Honored At State Convention

Members of the Sullivan FFA Chapter attended the 89th annual Illinois State FFA Convention June 13-15 along with 3,500 other FFA members, advisors, and guests.

“Maximize” was the theme of the three-day event which recognizes annual successes of Illinois FFA members, elects the major state officer team, and celebrates agriculture.

Students at the convention were greeted with activities including an exhibit hall featuring colleges and businesses, an evening dance and talent show, and an opportunity to engage in the history of Illinois’ capital city.

The convention program featured keynote presentations by National FFA Central Region Vice President Valerie Earley, of Minn., and Hoan Do, a former contestant on “American Ninja Warrior,” student success coach, and motivational speaker.

Masonic Lodge Open House Honors 300th Anniversary

George A, Sentel Masonic Lodge #764 is celebrating the 300th anniversary of free masonary with an open house from 1-3 p.m. Saturday, June 24.

Mike Rollins, Worshipful Master of the Lodge, explained that local Lodge members had pitched in to update the Jefferson Street Lodge. With the help from the city of Sullivan facade program Masons have replaced windows and the entryway of the building as well as updating the interior.

He explained Masonic Lodges all over the world will celebrate the 300th anniversary on the same date. The Sullivan lodge will be open to the public where they may view the history of Masons in Sullivan.

The Sullivan Lodge was chartered in 1883 on October 3 and moved from 6 1/2 E. Harrison to the old National Guard Armory in April 1956.

By February 1956 the Sullivan Lodge became George A. Sentel Lodge #764.

Sentel, a judge in Sullivan, was past Master of the Lodge serving in 1907 and was a member of the Sullivan Chapter #128 Royal Arch Mason and charter member of the Gil W. Barnard Commandry #74 Knights Templar.

In 1918 Judge Sentel and Winifred Titus, of the Titus Opera House family, married at 45 and lived in the Titus mansion. Landscaping was featured on the grounds with horticulturists from U of I studying the 105 different trees and 118 shrubs tended by Mrs. Sentel while they occupied the home. Read More

Illinois Supreme Court Assigns Justice Harris To Fill Vacancy In Fourth District Appellate Court

Justice Rita B. Garman and the Illinois Supreme Court have announced that Justice Thomas M. Harris has been assigned as an Appellate Court Judge in the Fourth District.

Justice Harris was reassigned to fill the vacancy created following the retirement of Justice M. Carol Pope on August 1, 2017.

The assignment of Justice Harris takes effect on August 1, 2017 and will conclude on December 3, 2018 when the vacancy will be filled by the winner of the November 2018 general election.

“I am pleased to announce the assignment of Justice Thomas M. Harris to the vacancy created by the retirement of Justice Carol Pope,” Justice Garman said. “In his over four years on the appellate court he has shown himself to be a thoughtful and deliberate jurist, who writes thorough and well-reasoned opinions. He is widely regarded by members of the bench and bar as an outstanding judge, with a judicial temperament that shows respect for all who come before the court. I am certain that he will serve the people as faithfully and as well as the impressive justice he is replacing.” Read More

SBL Hosts Bumps, Burps & Giggles Baby Fair

If you are an expectant parent, new parent or even an experienced parent or grandparent, Bumps Burps & Giggles Baby & Children’s Fair is back this year and better than ever.

The baby fair is set 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., Sunday, June 25, in Sarah Bush Lincoln’s Lumpkin Family Center and an adjacent air-conditioned tent. Participants may tour the newly renovated Women & Children’s Center, learn more about SBL services, meet new pediatric providers, purchase infant and children’s toys, books, clothing and accessories, and enter to win beautiful nursery furnishings and a wide variety of raffle prizes. The Springfield budget battle has major implications in Moultrie County as state police and Department of Conservation personnel look at cuts. Some public aid offices are closing, and Dept. of Mental Health Funds to the Moultrie County Beacon are threatened.

Barcelona and Sevilla Spain were part of the Joe and Joan Pound world tour. Barcelona was the site of the Summer Olympic Games. Guell Park in Barcelona features architecture by Gaudi, noted for extravagant designs.

William McNutt, partner in the Decatur law firm Lowe, Moore, Susler, McMutt and Wrigley, has been elected president of the Lincoln Trails Council of the Boy Scouts of America. Named in memory of Abraham Lincoln, the council serves Boy Scouts, Cub Scouts, Tiger Cubs, Explorers and career awareness in Moultrie and eight surrounding counties.

The village of Lovington received honorable mention for nearly achieving 100 percent level maintaining the required levels of fluoride in the municipal drinking water.  Read More

Poppies to honor those who gave all

On Friday, May 22nd, Ruth Keown, Vice-President of the Sullivan American Legion Auxiliary Unit 68, greeted the public at the entrance to the local Post Office, distributing Memorial Poppies. Each year, millions of Americans wear these Memorial Poppies in memory of American service members who lost their lives in war while serving their country, and to assist those Veterans who are now hospitalized or in rehabilitation, suffering from wounds and illnesses. Memorial Day poppies distributed by the American Legion symbolize the ultimate sacrifice made by service members and are a tribute to those who lost their lives in war. Wearing the poppy is a way to honor the fallen and ensure their bravery is never forgotten.
