Early voting has increased over the last couple of elections, with many voters stating that they like the convenience of choosing the day and time which best fits their schedule. Plus many have said that it’s easier to drive and vote at the courthouse than driving to their poll location.
As far as early voting goes, this is the second election where early voting began on the same day as what used to be called absentee voting, which was the first day of voting. Read More

The Sullivan Civic Women’s Club met April 10 in the Moultrie County Senior Center featuring Healthcom founder Ralph Kirk as guest speaker.
Kirk is CEO of one of the largest family owned and operated medical alert companies in the United States.
He founded the company in 1992 because his aunt experienced an unaided fall. Read More

A recent change to the rule governing how lawyers deal with unidentified funds in their pooled client trust accounts has generated over $1,000,000 for legal aid in Illinois.
In March 2015, the Supreme Court of Illinois amended Rule 1.15 of the Illinois Rules of Professional Conduct to require Illinois lawyers to remit unidentified funds in these client trust accounts to the Lawyers Trust Fund of Illinois after a 12-month due diligence process to determine who owns the funds. Since the new rule went into effect on July 1, 2015, the Lawyers Trust Fund (LTF) has received $1,007,829.21.
“For the 1.8 million Illinoisans living in poverty, legal aid is the only realistic option when confronted with a serious legal problem,” said LTF executive director Mark Marquardt. “Unfortunately, legal aid groups are facing serious financial headwinds in terms of both state and federal funding, which make this new source of revenue even more critical.” Read More

Sarah Bush Lincoln is moving forward with its plan to raze the former Pizza Hut and build a fully modern clinic in Shelbyville.
Demolition is set to begin in mid-April with construction to follow. The new site, located at 1215 W. Main St., will replace clinic’s current location in HSHS Good Shepherd Hospital in Shelbyville. Read More

Sullivan holds its second Festival of Stars honoring many past stars appearing at The Little Theatre on the Square with the Sidewalk of Stars during the May 15-17 festival. Included in the entertainment were Benjy and the Be-Bops, Prairie Winds quartet, children’s caricaturist Bob Dondeville, Gene Trimble’s Strolling Clown Band, Ken Carlyle and the Cadillac Cowboys.
Bethany school board hired Dave Benning as assistant football coach and is continuing its search for a head coach.
Three-year-old Kara E. Lawler of Dalton City took her grandmother’s car for a drive around town. The child escaped with the keys and had the doors locked and car started before her grandmother could reach her. Grandma was only able to watch the child make a U-turn, head into a parking lot, over a railroad tie barrier and come to rest, after striking a parked pickup owned by Kelly M. Blakey of Decatur. The Millikin-Decatur Symphony Orchestra (MDSO) will conclude its 2016-17 performance season with a masterworks concert at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, April 22, in Kirkland Fine Arts Center.
Entitled “Symphonic Revolutionaries,” the concert will feature performances of Beethoven’s “Piano Concerto No. 3,” Rautavaara’s “Cantus Arcticus” and Beethoven’s “Symphony No. 3.” Read More

Watercolor artist Frank Ventura will conduct Sullivan Art Club’s second workshop of the 2017 season Saturday, April 22.
The workshop will be held at St. Columcille Church hall located on the east end of the church at the corners of W. Jackson and McClellan streets. There is a dedicated entrance to the hall adjacent to the parking lot.
Participants will be led in creating an abstract composition using watercolors and ink. In addition to regular watercolor supplies, attendees should bring 140# cold pressed watercolor paper cut to 3½ x 8½ and another one cut to 4½ x 10½, a straight-edged ruler, a black waterproof pen/fine marker, tube watercolors, a French curve and any other graphic templates they might have. Lovington community fireworks display will move to the Community Club’s annual fish fry June 16 following village board action March 13.
Jake Kamm announced the proposed fireworks displays included in the June 16 program, noting that an American flag display was added to 2017.
Trustee April Daily explained members of the Community Club hoped moving the fireworks would bring more people to the fish fry. Read More
