January 4 Was One of the Best

Dear Editor,

January 4, 2017 was one of the best newspapers I have read.

I always enjoy Trudy Lieberman and Jim Nowlan’s columns, but this week the story on the Bethany library was very good.

I was glad to read that Bethany High School class yearbooks are digitally available. Read More

Employer Withholding Tax Changes Increase Accuracy

News Progress Posted on January 11, 2017 by webmasterJanuary 10, 2017

•January 11, 2017•

In an effort to reduce taxpayer filing and payment errors and increase the detection of false income reporting and insolvent employers, the Illinois Department of Revenue (“IDOR”) will begin requiring all withholding taxpayers to file quarterly withholding income tax returns and report detailed payroll data beginning in 2017. The change impacts employers, payroll service providers, software developers and individuals who pay gambling and lottery winnings. IDOR believes the detailed reporting of amounts and dates of any tax withheld under the new quarterly filing will make it easier and more accurate for withholding filers. Read More

Thinking About Health: Changing Obamacare Likely To Mean Higher Costs,Less Coverage – or Both

News Progress Posted on January 4, 2017 by webmasterJanuary 3, 2017

By Trudy Lieberman

Lori Eng, a 62-year-old office manager who works in western Nebraska, sent an email not long ago telling me she was “terrified” she might lose her Obamacare health insurance. The many horror stories passed along in the media had frightened her, and she wanted me to hear from someone who had benefitted from the law.

No wonder Eng is scared. Ever since the Affordable Care Act passed almost seven years ago, opponents, mostly Republicans, have vowed to repeal the law and replace it with a different plan. The November election results now make that a possibility.

Eng didn’t have health insurance before the Affordable Care Act came along. Her four-day-a-week job did not provide it, and her salary - less than $20,000 a year - was too low for her to swing an insurance premium. She bought her first Obamacare policy from one of the insurance co-ops that operated in Iowa and Nebraska that was supposed to offer cheaper coverage. It did - until it collapsed. With her government subsidy, she was able to buy a plan for only $50. She also qualified for an extra subsidy to help pay her deductible and coinsurance.

When the co-op failed, as most eventually did, she got a similar plan the next year from another company. Because her subsidy had increased, she paid only $34 each month. That year Eng was diagnosed with breast cancer, and her treatment, which included chemotherapy and a double mastectomy, cost around $200,000. She paid just $1,450 out of pocket. Read More

Remember When? 1-4-2017

25 Years Ago This Week

Moultrie County’s involvement in the Persian Gulf War, the Sullivan High School girls’ state basketball championship, Sullivan’s first Festival of Stars and the prospect of a bedsheets ballot for next year’s state primary election head the News-Progress’ list of top stories for 1991.

Having to delay college graduation by a semester is glorious news to Scot Hollonbeck, the grandson of Lefty and Wilma Hollonbeck of rural Sullivan. The 21-year-old accomplished wheelchair racer from Rochelle is postponing his summer 1992 graduation from the University of Illinois because he is qualified for the 1992 Olympic trials next June in New York.

Jeffrey White, son of Mr. and Mrs. Robert White of Sullivan, was selected as a student marshal for the recent commencement ceremony at Eastern Illinois University. A 1989 graduate of Sullivan High School, he is a junior majoring in botany/zoology.

Blake Bartimus, son of Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Bartimus of Bethany, has been initiated into Kappa Delta Pi at Eastern Illinois University. Bartimus, an 1989 graduate of Bethany High School, is a junior elementary education major. Read More

ISP Encourages Safe Driving Habits During the Holidays

News Progress Posted on December 28, 2016 by webmasterDecember 27, 2016

•December 28, 2016•

The upcoming holidays will bring family and friends together for the final major celebrations of the year. Unfortunately, some will choose to make life-threatening driving decisions while behind the wheel. Captain Louis Kink, District 10 Commander, encourages everyone to enjoy the holidays but to do so responsibly.

Motor vehicle crashes are a leading cause of death among those aged 1-54 in the U.S., and traffic crashes are largely preventable. If you are traveling during the holidays, be accountable for your actions and do your part to prevent a traffic crash. Read More

Poppies to honor those who gave all

News Progress

On Friday, May 22nd, Ruth Keown, Vice-President of the Sullivan American Legion Auxiliary Unit 68, greeted the public at the entrance to the local Post Office, distributing Memorial Poppies. Each year, millions of Americans wear these Memorial Poppies in memory of American service members who lost their lives in war while serving their country, and to assist those Veterans who are now hospitalized or in rehabilitation, suffering from wounds and illnesses. Memorial Day poppies distributed by the American Legion symbolize the ultimate sacrifice made by service members and are a tribute to those who lost their lives in war. Wearing the poppy is a way to honor the fallen and ensure their bravery is never forgotten.
