Illinois Products Expo Offers ‘Taste Of Illinois Agriculture’

This year the 19th annual Illinois Products Expo will offer a ‘Taste of Illinois agriculture’ as visitors will be able to taste, sample and purchase all of what Illinois has to offer. Dozens of Illinois food companies, wineries and agricultural associations will take part in the upcoming agricultural showcase on the Illinois State Fairgrounds.

The Expo’s food offerings will include fresh meat products, pizza, sauces, homemade jellies and jams, ice cream, and gourmet seasonings all produced, packaged or processed in Illinois. There will also be non-food items, such as soy candles and agricultural-based soaps and lotions on display and available for purchase. Sullivan Representative honored by Country Financial

Country Financial representative Elizabeth Houser of Sullivan has earned a position on the insurance group’s distinguished All American team.

Sullivan Civic Women Hold Meeting

Ann Wheeler, a candidate for the Sullivan School Board, and Stepheny McMahon, a representative of the 100 Women Who Care organization, were the guest speakers at the Feb. 13 meeting of the Sullivan Civic Women’s Club.

The SCWC voted to increase their scholarship amounts to four scholarships in the amount of $600 each. Sullivan High School seniors may pick up applications for the scholarships at the high school.  Read More

Shimkus Sending Staff Member to Bethany

Congressman John Shimkus (R, Illinois-15) has a tradition of having his staff hold office hours in addition to those he holds himself. This is an opportunity to meet with someone from Shimkus’ office in Bethany.

“These office hours allow you to meet face to face with my staff instead of over the telephone or having to drive to Effingham,” Shimkus explained. “The staff person will be able to handle any issue you may have regarding my office or the federal government.” Read More

Sullivan motorists were enjoying 89.9 cent per gallon gasoline as the new Sullivan 7-Eleven held its grand opening on S. Hamilton St.

A Lovington woman was ticketed at the intersection of Jackson and Hamilton streets after her vehicle “T-boned” a Chevrolet van driven by Robert E. Best, 60, of Sullivan.

Carol Pratt, 34, of Arthur was unable to avoid striking a horse that had wandered onto Route 133 near CR1700E . Horse owner Enos N. Schrock was attempting to retrieve the horse when the accident occurred.

Rev. J.T. Burns of San Diego, Calif., pastor at First Presbyterian Church in Sullivan in the 1930s and early 40s, visited friends and family. His wife Margaret (Chapin) was daughter of former Moultrie County News publishers Mr. and Mrs. Arlo Chapin. Read More

Caregiving Services are Available at Senior Center

Providing care for a parent, disabled child or spouse can often be a lonely and thankless job.  For many it can be an overwhelming responsibility. But, it doesn’t have to be a burden thanks to services provided by the Caregiver Advisory Services Program (CASP) available at the Senior Center in Sullivan.

Those providing care for anyone over the age of 60 or for an adult disabled child over 18 are eligible for these services. The caregiver advisor is available to schedule home visits, help identify specific needs, advise of service options available, follow up with emotional and technical support and plan educational training sessions and support groups. Beat the Winter Blues, That is Inside Recess ALAH Kindergarten Project

Crossman’s kindergarten class has plenty of energy and they are ready to learn.

Emily Crossman, Arthur Elementary School kindergarten teacher is raising funds through DonorsChoose.org to help students beat the winter blues.

The Beat the Winter Blues, That Is Inside Recess has a $1210 goal and needs some $920 more to purchase unit blocks, Playstix, and Magna-tiles for inside recess.

“Kindergartners are energetic, motivated, and enthusiastic learners. They come into the room ready to learn, move, and interact,” Crossman said.

“The students are eager to try new skills, learn new concepts, and participate in silly activities. Kindergartners soak up anything and everything you throw at them,” she continued. “Watching them grow, mature, and succeed has been one of the greatest joys of my career.” Read More

Sullivan Elementary School recently received 60 backpacks filled with school supplies through Amazon’s “Together, We Give Back to School” campaign. End of the Line Tackle & Bait, an Amazon delivery partner, nominated Sullivan Elementary for the program, and the school’s submission was selected to receive the donation.
