The public is invited to gather at the home of Philip and Nina Martin Saturday, Nov. 5 for a musical afternoon featuring the piano and vocal music of German composer Robert Schumann (1810-1856).
The program will include eight short piano pieces published together as Fantasiestucke, performed by Philip Martin, and the song cycle Liederkreis, based on the poetry of Heinrich Heine, performed by Eastern Illinois University vocal instructor Dr. Nicholas Provenzale. Read More

The Sullivan Civic Women’s Club met Monday, October 10 in the Moultrie County Senior Center.
The guest speaker was Sonya Best who gave a talk on the history of the News Progress.
She reported that Bob and Marion Best were looking for a small town to start a newspaper. They were reading about The Little Theatre on the Square in Sullivan and decided Sullivan was an up and coming place to work and raise a family.
In 1961 they purchased the Moultrie County News from Lester and Louise Lippencott, and the company now prints several other news publications as well such as the Tri County Journal, Tuscola Journal, Illiopolis Sentinel, Oakwood Independent, Mt. Pulaski Times and Arcola Record-Herald. It has continued to remain a family-owned business. Read More

An enhanced view of Moultrie County is on its way.
Members of the Moultrie County Board Public Health and Safety Committee voted to recommend upgrading the county’s aerial photo file.
Geographical Information Systems (GIS) committee chair Kevin McReynolds noted that four companies responded to the county’s request for upgrading aerial photos used for property tax assessment and the enhanced Coles-Moultrie 911 communication system.
McReynolds explained the improved oblique photo imagery gives a 3-D photo of properties which helps with enhanced 911 address location, as well as improving the tax assessors aerial photo quality. Read More

Kristy Sims, daughter of Tom and Kerrie Sims of Sullivan, was recently named the 1991-92 vocalist for the Elmhurst College Jazz Band.
Matt McClure, a 1988 graduate of Sullivan High School and a senior at Millikin University, is one of seven candidates for homecoming king at the university.
Paul Van Pelt, son of Mary Beth Van Pelt of Lovington, has entered Eureka College as a transfer student. He plans to major in physical fitness leadership.
It took the direction of Tammy Mitchell and the (wo)manpower of three of her teammates to bring Leah Matheson down before she could score a touchdown during the Bethany High School powder puff football game held last Wednesday. Matheson’s “Salty Dogs’ teammates were Tammy Yowell, Tina Perry and Amy White. They finished in last place during the annual event which is held in conjunction with homecoming week in Bethany. Springfield artist Stan Squires will return to Sullivan to conduct Sullivan Art Club’s final workshop of the 2016 season 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Saturday, October 15 with an hour break for lunch.
The workshop will be held at St. Columcille Church hall located on the east end of the church at the corners of W. Jackson and McClellan streets. There is a dedicated entrance to the hall adjacent to the parking lot. Read More

Sullivan cross country girls’ team members all ran personal best races in the 18-team St. Joseph-Ogden Invitational last Saturday to earn a sixth place finish. Katie Tice led the team at St Joe with a 13th place finish in 12:13, while Kari Kendall was 20th with a 12:36 and Kristy Jesse earned 25th place by finishing in 12:43. Freshman Marti Ray and Cristina Harris earned 75th and 115th respectively to round out the team scoring.
Seven-year-old Danielle Jenkins, daughter of Duane and Tammy Jenkins of Sullivan, has racked up several baton twirling awards in recent months, including capturing second place in the Miss Majorette of Illinois pageant. Other wins were at the Silver Knights Contest, Midwest Contest, Illinois State Championships, Notre Dame World Championships and the Illinois State Fair Contest.
Rain definitely didn’t spoil Bethany’s parade Friday as the Mustangs earned their first homecoming victory in five years. Bethany earned a 33-14 victory over the Illiopolis Pirates before the game was called with 41 seconds remaining. Not only did the homecoming parade come off between rain storms, so did the football game as the contest was all but completed when the first bolts of lightning flashed around the football field.
