The Illinois Department of Veterans Affairs (IDVA)-Veterans Education and Training Section (State Approving Agency) took immediate action to assist Illinois Veterans impacted in their educational endeavors due to the closing of the ITT Technical Institute.
“Our number one priority is the welfare of our Illinois Heroes and their families. When we received word of the closing of ITT Technical Institute, we contacted all veterans enrolled in that school to assist them to continue their education,” said Erica Jeffries, Director of the Illinois Department of Veterans’ Affairs. U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has determined the season closing dates of campgrounds and beaches at Lake Shelbyville.
- Opossum Creek Campground closed for the season Tuesday, September 6.
- Lone Point Campground closed for the season Tuesday, September 6 except for campsites 86 through 95, which will close Thursday, December 1.
- Coon Creek Campground closes for the season Monday, October 10 and Lithia Springs Campground Sunday, October 30. Read More

Moultrie County Clerk Georgia England has announced that Sullivan CUSD #300 Board candidate packets for the April 4, 2017 Consolidated Election will be available for pickup September 19, 2016 in the Moultrie County Clerk’s office located in the Courthouse, 10 S. Main, Ste. 6 in Sullivan.
Candidate petitions for Sullivan School Board cannot be circulated for signatures until Tuesday September 20, 2016. Filing of petitions will be in the county clerk’s office beginning Monday December 12, 2016 to Monday December 19, 2016. Hours of filing are 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. except on the last day of filing when the office will remain open until 5 p.m. If two or more candidates file their petitions simultaneously as of the opening hour of the filing period (December 12) or within the last hour of the filing period (December 19), a lottery will be held December 21 at 9 a.m. in the county clerk’s office to determine candidate placement on the April 4, 2017 Consolidated ballot. Congressman John Shimkus (R, Illinois-15) is now accepting submissions for this year’s Congressional App Challenge, a coding competition for high school students. The Challenge submission period will run through October 26, 2016.

The oldest known Amish house in Illinois is about to be moved Tuesday, September 20 to a new home at the newly established Illinois Amish Museum and Heritage Center just west of Chesterville. The house was built by Moses Yoder shortly after his arrival in Illinois in 1865. Yoder, Daniel Miller and Daniel Otto and their families were the first Amish immigrants to settle near Arthur in that year.
Moses Yoder’s house along with a second house built in 1882 by later immigrant Daniel Schrock, were saved from demolition in 1999. They have been in storage behind Yoder’s Kitchen in Arthur ever since waiting for a new home.
The houses originally were going to be located in Rockome Gardens to become part of the Illinois Amish Museum located there. With the conversion of Rockome to a wildlife park, however, both the houses and the Amish Museum were left without a home until land was recently acquired one half mile west of Chesterville on Illinois Route 133. Windsor High School Ag teacher Emily Perry and the FFA officer team spent time this summer learning how to work together in a challenge room at the Champaign-Urbana Adventures in Time and Space.
During the Windsor Harvest Picnic, members hosted the Saturday morning breakfast, worked the pedal tractor pull, participated in the parade and sold squares for Bessie Bingo. Winners of Bessie Bingo were Bob Peadro and Brent Curry.
Currently FFA members are preparing for the Moultrie County Soils Judging competition to be held September 21.

25 Years Ago This Week
Twenty- five players are on the Bethany Mustangs football team this year with the majority of the team being experienced seniors. Seven juniors, three sophomores and five freshmen are added to the roster. Returning senior starters include Greg Dickens, Rick Shutter, Gabe Miller, Ben Osman, Steve Van Loon, Eric Ashley and Ryan Martin. Other seniors include Shane Weybright, Terry Still and David Snyder.
Forming new friendships is the aim of a new singles group in Sullivan known as the Kindred Spirits which was formed in May. The group, spearheaded by Sullivan residents Wanda Hall, Olene Hunter, and Helen Standerfer, is for singles, widows, widowers and divorcees of all ages who are interested in meeting others and participating in social activities.
Ten members of the Sullivan cross country team started off together during a dual meet with Shelbyville and Argenta-Oreana, held last week in Wyman Park. Powered by performances of Katie Tice, Kari Kendall and Kristy Jesse, the Lady Redskins were victors in the meet.
Just two weeks away, huge quantities of traffic and many new elevator and coffee shop topics will descend on Dalton City during the 1991 Farm Progress Show planned for Sept. 24-26 on the Boggs, Harris and Orris farms. Read More

The statewide average rainfall for August was 6.89 inches, 3.30 inches above normal and the wettest August on record, according to Illinois State Climatologist Jim Angel, Illinois State Water Survey, University of Illinois.
This year’s rainfall just beat the old record of 6.86 inches set back in 1977. The highest rainfall total was in Sterling with 14.01 inches.
A damp July with a very wet August combined equals the wettest July-August on record. The rainfall total of July-August was 13.74 inches, which is 6.07 inches above normal. It beat the old record for July-August of 12.83 inches, set back in 1915.
The highest two-month rainfall total was in Downers Grove with 22.93 inches of rain. Read More

Two of the oldest banks in the county are merging to form First Community Bank of Moultrie County.
Ray Duncan, Chairman of the Board of First National Bank of Sullivan (est. 1905) and Chairman and CEO of Hardware State Bank (est.1885) of Lovington, announced the formation of First Community Bank of Moultrie County this week.
“First Community Bank of Moultrie County is only a name change,” stated Duncan. “All decisions will continue to be made locally.”
The merger will provide the new bank with more resources as it looks to provide customers with additional services from further investment in technology and product lines. Read More
