Just flipping through I found this little bit. Workers from Union Pacific Railroad are repairing switches and ties and doing general maintenance work this week at the Jackson Street crossing in Sullivan. During the project traffic has been detoured to the south. Anyone around Sullivan last week will enjoy this little bit as I’m sure we all did the detour at least once.

Donald Ferguson, central office switching technician for GTE (General Telephone Electronics) in Sullivan, will retire Sept. 30 after 30 years of service.

John Woerner has joined Dave Vance at Ag Answers in Sullivan as a new agronomist.

Deneen Frye of Sullivan recently passed her state certification exam to be licensed as a veterinary technician. She graduated in May from Parkland College in Champaign with an associate degree in veterinary technology. Frye is employed by the Kaskaskia Valley Animal Hospital in Sullivan.

Jesse Carlock, 15, of rural Sullivan accomplished his first solo flight in a glider Aug. 11 at Moweaqua. The son of Kenneth and Deanna Carlock, he is a member of the Decatur Civil Air Patrol Unit and returned home Aug. 3 after spending two weeks with the unit the Experimental Airplane Assn. Loyalty is the Virtuous Reality word of the week and is defined as “faithfully committed”. It is addressed by Marilyn Leonard.

“To be loyal or faithfully committed to me is first of all believe in something and then be loyal or endure to the end.

“First and foremost is to be loyal to Jesus Christ, for the Bible tells us to put God first in all things. Find out what He expects of you and be loyal to Him. Read More

The Illinois Job Honor Awards is accepting nominations for its first annual awards event, to be conducted November 30, 2016 in Lisle, IL. The Awards will celebrate Illinoisans who have overcome significant barriers to employment and the employers who hire them.

Founded in Iowa in 2014, the awards are spreading nationwide under the banner of America’s Job Honor Awards. Previous honorees have overcome physical and mental disabilities, criminal convictions, limited English proficiency and long-term unemployment in their struggle for employment.

“Our society celebrates lottery winners, movie stars and professional athletes,” notes founder Kyle Horn. “We rarely hear inspiring stories of individuals whose lives are transformed through the hard work and perseverance that leads to meaningful employment.

Poppies to honor those who gave all

News Progress

On Friday, May 22nd, Ruth Keown, Vice-President of the Sullivan American Legion Auxiliary Unit 68, greeted the public at the entrance to the local Post Office, distributing Memorial Poppies. Each year, millions of Americans wear these Memorial Poppies in memory of American service members who lost their lives in war while serving their country, and to assist those Veterans who are now hospitalized or in rehabilitation, suffering from wounds and illnesses. Memorial Day poppies distributed by the American Legion symbolize the ultimate sacrifice made by service members and are a tribute to those who lost their lives in war. Wearing the poppy is a way to honor the fallen and ensure their bravery is never forgotten.
