Several ribbons were awarded during the Festival of Stars sand sculpture contest Saturday in Sullivan. In the preschool category Emilee Sanders won first place for her volcano sculpture, and Andrew Crawford, with the help of his brother Chris won second place. Alex Knobloch and Matt Mossman won first place for their castle in the K-2 category. Second place went to Dane White. In the 3-5 category, Lori Halford won first place for her castle, and Casey Matthews and Norah Hanford won second for their turtle.

Seventy-eight runners participated in the Festival of Stars 5K on Saturday. Participating from Sullivan were Brett Cordell, Don Cruit, Kevin Moran, Jake Haegen, Kim Miller, Brian McDowell, Mark Dickens, Steve Corzine, Michael Craig, Justin Wheeler, Dick Issacs, Patty Marlow, Carole Moore and Ann Dickens. Participating from Bethany were Ronald A. White and Anthony Baxter. Cordell, Haegen, Marlow and Moore all finished first place in their categories.

Two Sullivan High School Scholastic Bowl members have been named to the All-State team. Sullivan’s Matthew Stone and Keena Baumgartner have been named to the first time all-state team in scholastic bowl. Coach Ken Johnson is extremely pleased that two of his team members were named.

Lake Land College agriculture instructor Tom Reedy has been awarded the 1991 Faculty of the Year award sponsored by the Lake Land Faculty Assn.

Joyce Cocksure was elected 1992 president of Sullivan American Legion Post 68 during a meeting May 6. Serving with her will be Darcel Vitzhum, first vice-president; Barbara Stinson, second vice-president; Ann Shaw, secretary; Genevieve Sutton, treasurer; Charlotte Stone, chaplain; Joan Taylor, historian; and Marie Mossman, sergeant at arms. Three Sullivan residents received diplomas during the 2016 Spring Commencement exercises held May 6 and 7 in Edwardsville.

They include Zachary Coon in construction management and John O’Brien and Chad Frerichs, both in accountancy.

It may have been red dye on the heads and faces of kids pretending to be hurt or dead, but students at Hoopeston Area High School saw up close what could happen if they drive drunk.

Carle Hoopeston Regional Health Center and Vermilion County first responders drilled to test their response to a drunken driving crash with multiple casualties. Hoopeston Area High School students played the parts injured patients. Charlotte Strawser, RN, coordinator of the Emergency Department at Carle Hoopeston Regional Health Center, said the drill provides a reminder for parents to talk to their children about safe driving. The Illinois Department of Veterans’ Affairs, State Sen. Dale Righter (R-Mattoon), and the Illinois Senate Republican caucus are teaming up to honor and remember the sacrifice of the brave servicemen and servicewomen who have passed away.

The public is encouraged to submit a photograph and written remembrance of veterans who are no longer with us, which will be displayed on the Illinois State Capitol Memorial Day Remembrance Wall. The submissions will be displayed in the State Capitol Rotunda starting at the beginning of the Memorial Day holiday weekend, Thursday, May 26 through Monday, July 4.

“Every veteran’s life deserves to be recognized, remembered, and honored,” Righter said. “They all have a story and a legacy that must always be kept alive. This Memorial Day Remembrance Wall is a tribute to them. It’s also a very important way for family and friends to share their stories and memories of our brave men and women.” Read More
