Budget Impasse Costing State Millions in Lost Revenue

News Progress Posted on June 15, 2016 by webmasterJune 15, 2016

•June 15, 2016•

The state of Illinois earned $7.8 million less in investment income the first quarter of 2016 as a result of the budget impasse, Illinois Treasurer Michael Frerichs said today. That translates into projected missed earnings of $31.2 million for 2016.

Threats of unplanned fund sweeps and the need to pay court-ordered bills required the treasurer’s office to make short-term investments that prioritized cash availability rather than longer-term, higher-yielding investment opportunities.

“A budget is a spending plan. Without a spending plan, it is very difficult to know what money is needed for basic government operations and what money for normal investments,” Frerichs said. “The law requires us to have money available to pay bills. The inability to adequately plan investments rips money out of the pockets of every person in our state, especially hurting those on the margins such as the poor, senior citizens, and children.”

Metropolitan Family Services of Chicago is among the service providers that essentially has lent the state of Illinois money because the state has not paid its bills. Read More

One of Sullivan and Moultrie County’s claims to fame—only one stoplight—ended Tuesday when a second stoplight was turned on at Hamilton and Water streets.

The top two students in Lovington’s High School class of 1991 are valedictorian Lori Ann Byers and salutatorian Greg Edward McCoy.

Doug West, a student at Sullivan High School, took second place in Keyboarding II competition during the annual high school business contest sponsored by the Dept. of Business Education and Administrative Information Systems at Eastern Illinois University.

Two Bethany students who attend the Decatur Area Vocational Center were recognized recently during the school’s annual Student Recognition Ceremony in the Decatur Civic Center. Brenda Butt, who is enrolled in the DAVC food service program, and Chad Yantis, who is enrolled in the welding program, each received a $50 U.S. savings bond, a plaque and a certificate for being named students of the year in their programs. Richard Pryor Foundation Gives to Carver Center

News Progress Posted on June 8, 2016 by webmasterJune 8, 2016

•June 8, 2016•

Illinois State Treasurer Michael Frerichs today visited the Carver Community Center to highlight the nearly $19,000 the center received through the unclaimed property division.

Frerichs occasionally visits unclaimed property recipients to show the public that the program is legitimate and is not a scam. The treasurer’s office never charges money to reclaim cash or property.

“The Carver Center serves a niche in the Peoria community, and I am happy that we are able to assist its mission to help youths and families,” Frerichs said. “Money in our unclaimed property division belongs to the residents of Illinois. It should be in their bank accounts rather than the state’s safe.”

Ken Hinton is the executive director at the Carver Center. “This unexpected surprise will help us serve our community and further our mission,” Hinton said. “The unclaimed property program is real and claiming the money was a simple, straight-forward process. Ours is a perfect example of not knowing there was a gift simply waiting for our claim which will result in us being able to serve and help our community in multiple ways.” Read More
