25 Years Ago This Week

Construction has begun on the new Hydro-Gear factory south of Sullivan. Workers from Standerfer Bros. General Contractors of Sullivan began pouring footings last week for the facility, where transaxles for lawn and garden tractors will be manufactured in a joint effort with Agri-Fab of Sullivan. Construction of the building is expected to be completed by Sept. 1.

For the second time this season, Braidy Miller has been selected as the Mid-Continent Conference Track and Field Athlete of the Week. The 1987 SHS graduate set a school record in the hammer throw. He also took first place honors in the discus with a toss of 179-2. Miller bettered his previous EIU record by seven feet with a toss of 198-3 for a first place finish at the SEMOtion Relays in Cape Girardeau, Mo.

Bethany’s Andrew Hagerman struck out 14 batters and gave up six hits to lead the Mustangs in a 28-5 victory over Stonington last week in Meridian Conference action. Hagerman’s 14 strikeouts accounted for all but one of Stonington’s outs in the five inning contest. Bethany batters walked 26 times to send their teammates around the bases for the majority of the Mustangs’ runs. Ben Osman hit a two-run homer in the first inning, and “everyone got a chance to play,” said coach Dave Benning.

Nine Sullivan High School students recently attended a spring workshop put on by the Eastern District Assn. of Student Councils at Paris High School. SHS seniors Michelle Keown, Matt Stone and Jason Cobb; juniors, Wade Baumgartner and John Freese; and freshmen Tracey Johnson, Nikki Larkin, Matt Corzine and Tim Lowry all participated in the evening workshop. Ten years ago, on March 21, 2006, the CEO of Twitter sent out his first tweet. It’s appropriate, with spring coming, that the famous CEO was chirping in a format that the world now embraces as a vital form of interactive communication. Similarly, Social Security is no stranger to social media.

Updated regularly, Social Security Matters is our blog. It’s our hub for Social Security news, such as new features to my Social Security, changes in policy, retirement planning, and benefit information. USDA Rural Development in Illinois is seeking loan applications.

Small, rural communities, not for profit organizations and special purpose districts are often faced with steep challenges when it comes to funding costly, yet basic needed services. The historically low interest rates of 2.875% for loans up to 40 years, recently announced by USDA Rural Development, may be just what it takes to make needed upgrades affordable.

Residents look for critical services from their community, such as protecting life and property, ensuring education and providing adequate health care, public services or public safety.  Read More

Motorcycle Season Shifts to Top Gear

News Progress Posted on April 20, 2016 by webmasterApril 20, 2016

•April 20, 2016•

With spring cruising in and motorcycle season shifting into top gear, Illinois riders are eager to enjoy warm weather on the open road again. Before taking the first ride of the season, the Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) and Illinois State Police remind motorcyclists to take necessary steps to ensure their safety and “Gear Up – Ride Smart.”

The annual campaign urges riders to take precautionary measures before getting back on their bikes. Motorcyclists are encouraged to conduct a pre-ride safety inspection of their bike and refresh their riding skills with a motorcycle training class.

Proper safety gear is essential to safe riding. Motorcyclists are encouraged to wear the right safety equipment and accessories, including high-visibility (Hi Viz) clothing, eye protection, gloves, jackets, pants, boots and a U.S. DOT-approved helmet, at all times.

“While most motorcycles are only on the road for part of the year, they account for almost 15 percent of all traffic fatalities” Illinois Transportation Secretary Randy Blankenhorn said. “By choosing the proper safety equipment and brushing up on their skills, riders can do their part in making 2016 even safer for motorcycles on Illinois roads. The message is simple: Gear Up – Ride Smart.” Read More

Focus on encouraging registration at Driver Services facilities

•April 13, 2016•

Secretary of State Jesse White kicked off the state’s organ/tissue donor campaign today as part of a statewide effort to encourage registration and awareness at all 138 Driver Services facilities.

“Since many registrations happen at our facilities, we want to be sure that people are informed when making the decision to give the gift of life,” said White. “There are many myths that make some people fearful about donation, and we want to dispel those concerns.”

During the campaign organ/tissue donor staff will be on-site at a number of facilities to answer questions regarding donation. Countertop displays of local recipients and donor families will be featured at various Driver Services facilities so that patrons may see how organ/tissue donation impacts their community. In addition, facility personnel will receive additional training on organ/tissue donation in order to discuss registration with patrons.

April is National Donate Life Month. White will attend events at facilities, hospitals and other venues throughout Illinois to encourage donation. Organizations will be working together to promote donor awareness throughout the state.  Read More

Attorney Fee Increase Applied to LAP

News Progress Posted on April 13, 2016 by webmasterApril 13, 2016

•April 13, 2016•

The Illinois Supreme Court announced that the annual registration fee for attorneys practicing in Illinois will increase by $3 next year.

The increased funds will be directed to the Lawyers’ Assistance Program (LAP), a not-for-profit organization that helps attorneys, judges, and law students get confidential assistance with substance abuse, addiction, and mental health issues.

Under amended Supreme Court Rule 756, the annual registration fee will increase from $382 to $385 in 2017 for attorneys who have been in active status for three years or longer. Attorneys in active status for less than three years, inactive status attorneys, and out-of-state attorneys eligible to practice in Illinois under Supreme Court Rule 707 will not see their attorney registration fees rise.

“This modest increase in the annual registration fee will have a significant impact on the LAP’s ability to provide services to impaired attorneys and to shine a light on the issues of addiction and mental illness in our profession,” Chief Justice Rita B. Garman said. “I have often observed that when the court is called upon to impose professional discipline on an attorney for some sort of professional misconduct, the attorney very often has an underlying history of substance abuse or mental illness. Intervention by the LAP, thus, serves not only the attorney whose career may be impacted by these issues but the members of the public who have placed their trust in the attorney.” Read More

Poppies to honor those who gave all

News Progress

On Friday, May 22nd, Ruth Keown, Vice-President of the Sullivan American Legion Auxiliary Unit 68, greeted the public at the entrance to the local Post Office, distributing Memorial Poppies. Each year, millions of Americans wear these Memorial Poppies in memory of American service members who lost their lives in war while serving their country, and to assist those Veterans who are now hospitalized or in rehabilitation, suffering from wounds and illnesses. Memorial Day poppies distributed by the American Legion symbolize the ultimate sacrifice made by service members and are a tribute to those who lost their lives in war. Wearing the poppy is a way to honor the fallen and ensure their bravery is never forgotten.
