Green Hand Bridge (continued)

Now for the real story behind the Green Hand Bridge. The one I told you last week was just for starters. This came to me on good authority from my friend Steve, whose grandfather, a long-time resident of East Nelson Township, told him all about it. 

Once upon a time, a long time ago, a married couple who lived in Allenville did not get along well. The neighbors soon noticed they were having trouble because their fights were frequent and noisy. (This was before air conditioning, and windows were open at night to get some breezes.  Neighbors could hear almost everything that went on in your house.)  Finally, after a very bad fight, the men of Allenville decided to do something about the abusive husband.  They gathered together as a group and approached the house. They intended to teach the young man a lesson.

Abagail Dean, a member of the Family, Career and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA) Chapter at Sullivan High School, recently competed at the FCCLA National Leadership Conference (NLC) held in Orlando, FL from July 5th to July 9th. The conference welcomed over 10,000 students, educators, and guests from across the nation for a week of competition, leadership development, and career exploration.

The Cadwell Community will host a Community Blood Drive with ImpactLife, the provider of blood components for local hospitals. The blood drive will be from 3:15 to 6:45 pm on Tuesday, August 19th at 1533 CR 1900N, inside the Donor Bus @ M&E Wood Crafts. To donate, contact ImpactLife Urbana at (800) 747 5401 or visit www.bloodcenter.org and use code 70636 to locate the drive. Appointments are requested. Potential donors must be at least 17 years of age (16 with parental permission form available through www.bloodcenter.org) and weigh more than 110 pounds. A photo ID is required to donate. For questions about eligibility, call ImpactLife at (800) 747 5401. Donors who last gave blood on or before 6/24/25 are eligible to give at this drive. Blood donation is a safe, simple procedure that takes about 45 minutes to one hour. Individuals with diabetes or controlled high blood pressure may be accepted as eligible donors. ImpactLife is a nonprofit community organization providing blood products and services to more than 100 hospitals and emergency medical service providers in Illinois, Iowa, Missouri, and Wisconsin, as well as researchers and resource-sharing partners across the country. Nominating petitions for candidates planning to run in the March 17, 2026, General Primary Election will be available in Moultrie County Clerk Linda Qualls’ office beginning Tuesday, August 5, 2025. This is also the first day to circulate nomination documents for candidates of established political parties and independent candidates.  

Monday, October 27, 2025, through Monday, November 3, 2025, candidates can file original nomination documents with the County Clerk’s Office. Office hours are Monday – Friday 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. On the last day of filing, November 3, 2025, office hours will be extended to 5:00 p.m.

The county-wide offices up for nomination are full terms for County Clerk & Recorder, Sheriff, Treasurer, and four-year terms for County Board members with five seats available. Precinct Committeemen will be elected during the primary as well.
