Sarah Bush Lincoln’s Mobile Mammography Services will be at the SBL Sullivan Clinic Feb. 18. The Mobile Mammography van helps provide mammograms to women who may not otherwise have access to, or be able to afford these life-saving preventive screens. Eighteen avid—and hardy—golfers took to the links New Year’s Day to compete in the fourth annual Richard Murphy Invitational “Frozen” Open at the Country Club. The three teams of six players each set new records this year, thanks to the hard crust of snow which required some digging to open the cups on the greens. The winning team—which came in four under par to pare four strokes off the previous record of 36 in the nine-hole tournament—was composed of Jan Haegen, Bob Hagen, Gordie Wood, Curtis Thompson, John Merryman and Paul Sager.
Students in Linda Brewer’s Bethany history classes recently learned first hand how lucky they are to live in the 20th Century. After spending more time than they had anticipated to complete projects such as braiding rugs and making replicas of log cabins, the students decided they were lucky they weren’t living in the 1700s and 1800s, the time period assigned by Brewer for them to make a project. “I learned they didn’t have as much spare time as we do because most of their time was spent cooking and weaving,” said Jodi Armer. Seventh grader Clayton Brush agreed. Brush made a cabin over break while on vacation in Florida and used white sand from the beach for the project.
“A first place with special merit,” one of only three such awards given to schools in the United States with enrollments of under 500 students, has been given to the 1990 Sullivan High School yearbook. Free preschool screenings for children between birth and five years of age are being conducted in area school districts. The free preschool screening is to see how a child is developing in the areas of concepts, motor, speech and language. The screening takes approximately one hour.

The Illinois Department of Insurance (DOI) has announced Karen Woods as the new director of Get Covered Illinois (GCI), the Illinois Health Insurance Marketplace that has enrolled nearly one million people in quality health coverage since it launched in 2013.
