Twenty-one years before the outbreak of the War Between the States 14 residents of the Asa Creek area organized the Christian Church of Asa Creek in what is now Sullivan. Later with the changes in population the name changed to First Christian Church.
In 1840 the first church meeting was held at the log cabin home of evangelist Levi Patterson. The organizer Levi Fleming served as first minister. Asa Creek area was part of Shelby County.
For the next 12 years the church remained very much the same until in 1853 a revival meeting in the Methodist Church with ministers Bushrod Henry, John Wilson and Manning T. Smith which added 50 new members to the congregation. They outgrew the cabin, and in 1853 a 40’ x 80’ house of worship was built on the corner of Harrison and Worth streets. It is interesting to note that there were two entrances, one for the men and another for the women.
At the end of the century the church membership had grown to the where the ‘house of worship’ building became too small. The building was torn down to make way for a larger church building. This building is now home to the First Baptist Church. Read More

October was pink in Moultrie County with employees of the courthouse closing out a month of Cancer Awareness.
“The ladies who put the Cancer Awareness luncheon on at the courthouse last Friday are what this is all about,” Moultrie County Relay for Life co-chair Diane Waggoner began.
The Moultrie County courthouse has employees who have battled cancer so the hospitality and support from that group illustrates the support the pink ribbon effort hopes to achieve.
Waggoner has been involved with the American Cancer Society for more than a decade, first as a volunteer and now as co-chair, coordinating efforts for Relay for Life. Read More

Over the years, the Shelby County C.E.F.S. office has been located at 2114 W South 3rd St. #26 in Shelbyville. At its location, it has served its community with outreach services and several government funded programs. The local branch agency has been able to serve many families and individuals in need. While it has been able to serve the community, the small branch office has always needed additional space.
The C.E.F.S. office will now be sharing space with the Job Center in Shelbyville at 515 N. Cedar (N. Rt. 128). “The new location will provide C.E.F.S. customers with better parking and handicap accessibility, better visibility to the public, and coordination of services with Job Center staff such as on-site job search assistance and direct access to the availability of various representatives at the office such as Veteran’s Administration and Department of Rehabilitation Services (DORS),” stated Beth Beck-Marts, the Coordinator of the Shelby County C.E.F.S. The Children’s Museum of Illinois, WAND-TV and Pepsi present the annual Halloween Concerts performed by Millikin University’s percussion ensembles. Millikin’s percussion ensembles will perform three special concerts in celebration of Halloween at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 29 and 6 p.m. and 8 p.m. Friday, Oct. 30.
This all-ages, family-friendly event of the season will take place in the infamously haunted Albert Taylor Theatre inside Shilling Hall on the campus of Millikin University. Guests are invited to join the ensemble in costume; best costume prizes will be awarded. Read More

With winter weather right around the corner, Lake Land College has taken steps to ensure that students, staff and faculty are aware of college closings and class and event cancellations.
There are several ways to receive the most up-to-date information on closings and cancellations. Every effort will be made to keep the college open, and in many cases, Lake Land College will remain open when elementary and secondary schools are closed.
In the event of inclement weather, mechanical or power failure, or other emergencies, the following procedures will be implemented. Closings will be communicated to the college community via area media outlets, emails, announcements on the home page, social media, text alerts and the Lake Land College student Hub. Since these methods are dependent on the cooperation of third parties and technology, the college encourages people to check multiple sources if it is anticipated that the college will be closed.
