Foodmobile Comes to Sullivan Oct. 3

News Progress Posted on September 23, 2015 by webmasterSeptember 23, 2015

•September 23, 2015•

A distribution by Eastern Illinois Foodbank will be held 9 a.m-noon Oct. 3 at Sullivan VFW. All Moultrie County residents who meet income eligibility criteria are welcome (see below). Those attending are asked to bring bags or boxes to transport food. A representative from Eastern Illinois Foodbank will be present to assist families and individuals interested in applying for SNAP benefits.

The Foodmobile distribution comes at a critical moment for area residents. Data released by Feeding America, the nation’s network of food banks, shows that a staggering 15% of people in eastern Illinois are considered food insecure, which means they sometimes lack adequate access to food. More shockingly, over 23% of children are food insecure. (http://feedingamerica.org/hunger-in-america/hunger-studies/map-the-meal-gap.aspx) Read More

•September 23, 2015•

America’s Farmers Grow Communities will partner again with farmers to award more than $3.3 million to community nonprofits across the country. In Illinois, 97 organizations will receive donations in 2016.

Sponsored by the Monsanto Fund, the program’s purpose is to make a positive impact in rural communities by giving farmers a chance to direct $2,500 donations to eligible nonprofit organizations of their choice. Farmer enrollment for Grow Communities kicked off on Aug. 1 and runs through Nov. 30, 2015.

Since the program’s inception, farmers have directed donations to help fire departments purchase equipment and complete training, send FFA and 4-H groups to contests and conventions, provide food pantries with meals to serve those in need and boost agriculture curriculum in rural school districts. Other beneficiaries of the program have included health care organizations, youth and community centers, state parks and economic development programs, among many others. Read More

Big Money Under Pillow

News Progress Posted on September 23, 2015 by webmasterSeptember 23, 2015

•September 23, 2015•

It turns out a good source for retirement income for today’s kids in Illinois may be right under their pillows.

According to a new analysis by Delta Dental of Illinois, if today’s six-year-olds in Illinois invest all the money they receive from the Tooth Fairy, they could be sitting on a combined total of roughly $1.9 billion by the time they reach 67, the traditional retirement age.

“That could mean a whopping $14,000 per child when current 6-year-olds in Illinois hit retirement age if the child invests all of his or her Tooth Fairy gifts,” says Karyn Glogowski, vice president of sales for Delta Dental of Illinois. Read More

•September 23, 2015•

C.E.F.S. Economic Opportunity Corporation recently showcased their 50th year of accomplishments that demonstrated that community action helps people and changes lives. During the 2015 annual meeting some very special people and organizations were recognized as valuable community partners who enhanced the level of service to those in need. According to C.E.F.S. Chief Executive Officer Paul White, “Without community partners like Moultrie County Interagency it would have been difficult to attain and achieve the agency outcomes and successes.”

Moultrie County Interagency is comprised of members from several private, public and nonprofit agencies who have joined together to provide knowledge and assistance to the community, to spread awareness about area resources and to promote learning about the community and the needs of residents. Representatives from the member agencies meet monthly to review the previous month’s minutes and talk about any upcoming events. Each month there is also a speaker that provides information that interagency members may pass on to their clients. Moultrie County Interagency collects donations each year to be used by the C.E.F.S. Moultrie County Outreach Office to help people in need. These funds have been used to assist with hotel stays, prescriptions, car repairs, utility bills, rent and groceries. Every year the Moultrie County Interagency requests that a portion of the donated funds be spent on elderly or disabled people in need of assistance with their utility bills. Read More
