Spencer Family Recognized by C.E.F.S.

As part of National Community Action Month, C.E.F.S. Economic Opportunity Corporation recently honored a local family for their personal achievements demonstrating the fact that community action helps people and changes lives. The Serena Spencer family of Sullivan was recognized at the May C.E.F.S. Board of Directors meeting as the 2015 Family of Distinction for exemplifying the spirit of hope and success that C.E.F.S. Economic Opportunity Corporation offers to all families in its mission to provide opportunities for people through education and support to achieve and maintain self-sufficiency.
The Spencer family was nominated for the award by the C.E.F.S. Moultrie County Outreach Office staff for the significant strides the family made in their pursuit of self-sufficiency since first seeking help from the agency. The family was also recognized and honored along with other families from across the state on May 3 by the Illinois Association of Community Action Agencies in Springfield as one of the outstanding Illinois families for their personal achievements to improve their lives. Rt. 32 Bridge Repairs Expected to Last Through October

The bridge between Sullivan and Windsor on Illinois Route 32 that spans Lake Shelbyville is expected to remain under construction through October.
According to Illinois Department of Transportation District Seven construction engineer Bob Utz, the bridge is undergoing an “extensive” replacement of the deck, which he described as “everything above the steel beams.” Read More

Boaters Reminded to Stay Safe National Safe Boating Week is May 16-22

Illinois Conservation Police officers – in observance of National Safe Boating Week – are reminding boat operators and passengers to wear life jackets and stay sober while on the water this boating season.
“As we head into our busy summer boating season in Illinois, we are reminding everyone who enjoys time on the water to make safety their first consideration,” said Illinois Conservation Police Chief Rafael Gutierrez. “Our message is pretty simple and straightforward: Fastening a life jacket can save your life, and staying sober while operating a boat is not only common sense, it’s the law.” Read More

Students Participate in Junior High Honors Band

Students from Okaw Valley Middle School and Windsor Junior High are among more than 130 students from 18 area junior high schools who participated in the Frances Watts Johnston Junior High Honors Band and Chorus Festival recently at Lake Land College. Those from Okaw Valley are Shelby Hagerman, trumpet; Shelby Harding, flute and Madison Vogel and Connor Powers both on baritone. Choir students include sopranos Sadie Zimmerman and Isabella Benning and alto Kaylee Taylor. Attending from Windsor are Miranda Hayward, flute, Logan Greuel, tenor saxophone, Michael McCoy, trombone and Brandon Newell, percussion. Read More

Shimkus Votes to End Uncertainty Over WOTUS

Congressman John Shimkus (R, Illinois-15) voted recently for H.R. 1732, the Regulatory Integrity Protection Act. The legislation would require the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and Army Corps of Engineers to withdraw their controversial proposed rule to regulate Waters of the United States (WOTUS). Sen. Rose works with Illinois Farm Bureau to Protect Landowners Rights

State Sen. Chapin Rose (R-Mahomet) and the Illinois Farm Bureau teamed up to add legal protections for homeowners and landowners when it comes to the planning and surveying for electric transmission lines on their property.
“This legislation is designed to provide better notification and more transparency during the entire process to landowners who are potentially involved in these projects,” Rose said. “Obviously, when you ‘flip a switch,’ we all want the lights to turn on, but how the big power companies treat people when planning for the delivery of electric service is no less important.” Read More

Secretary of State Mobile Unit in Sullivan May 21

Secretary of State Jesse White, in cooperation with the Elizabeth Titus Memorial Library, is offering drivers a chance to renew their driver’s license or vehicle registration renewal sticker, obtain a duplicate or corrected license, or obtain an Illinois identification card. White’s mobile unit will be available at the Sullivan library, located at 2 West Water in Sullivan, 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. May 21. Read More

Plans Underway for Sixth Annual Amish Country Tractor Cruise

The sixth annual Amish Country Tractor Cruise will be held Saturday, June 13 in Arthur. A 40 mile cruise will take riders on a picturesque cruise through the heart of Illinois Amish country that will feature the communities of Arthur and Lovington.
Registration for the cruise will begin at 7 a.m. at Yoder’s Kitchen, located on IL Route 133 in Arthur, and departure will be 8 a.m. A rest stop will be in Lovington at the firehouse, and lunch will be served by Yoder Farms and Drainage near Sullivan before returning to Arthur at approximately 2:30 p.m. This year the cruise is raising funds for “Christ’s Pantry” in Lovington which provides food assistance to needy families in Lovington and surrounding communities. Youth Book Club Meetings

Youth Book Club for fourth-eighth graders will meet Tuesday 4:30-5:30 May 19. They will make posters for a used book drive to collect books to be donated to the “Think Outside the Barn” at the September Farm Progress to promote reading.

Bob Ross Painting Class

Lovington Public Library District will offer the Bob Ross Painting 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturday May 16. There is a fee which includes paints and canvas. Participants are asked to provide a roll of paper towels and their lunch. Preregistration is required by 1 p.m. Thursday May 14 by calling the Lovington Library at 873-4468. Read More

Luminaria Ceremony at Relay for Life June 13

A special Luminaria Ceremony held during the American Cancer Society Relay For Life of Moultrie County remembers those lost to cancer and honors those who have survived. Luminarias will be lit at Wyman Park on June 13 to represent these individuals.
Anyone desiring to purchase a luminaria at $10 may do so by contacting Alicia Pettyjohn at 217-356-4861.
“Seeing the candles twinkle against the water at the park and knowing what each light represents is a sight and a feeling that moves you. It’s not really an event; it’s a point in time when everything stands still, and the only thing we feel is love, the breeze, and the beats of our hearts.” said Jamie Crosier, Relay Chairperson. “We hope to sell enough to light the entire area.” Read More

“Together, We Give Back to School”

Sullivan Elementary School recently received 60 backpacks filled with school supplies through Amazon’s “Together, We Give Back to School” campaign. End of the Line Tackle & Bait, an Amazon delivery partner, nominated Sullivan Elementary for the program, and the school’s submission was selected to receive the donation. Pictured (left to right) are Cameron Martin, Taylor Lilly, James Martin, Marla Martin and Angela McRill following the July 27 delivery.
