“Foodmobile” Food Giveaway In Gays March 21

The Eastern Illinois Foodbank will distribute a truckload of food to hungry area families at Gays City Hall at 815 Front St. 10 a.m. to noon March 21.

All Moultrie County residents who meet income eligibility criteria are welcome (see below). Those attending are asked to bring bags or boxes to transport food. A representative from Eastern Illinois Foodbank will be present to assist families and individuals interested in applying for SNAP benefits. Read More

Public transportation in rural communities differs greatly from the public transportation that is seen in the big cities. When most people think of public transportation, they think of waiting at a bus stop in all weather elements for a stuffy, over-crowded bus. That is not the case with Central Illinois Public Transit (CIPT).

CIPT is a demand response, door to door service. This means after a rider schedules a trip with a dispatcher, a bus will pick them up at the requested location and take them to their desired destination. Read More

Lake Land College hosts 8th Grade Career Conference

In an effort to introduce and expose local students to a variety of career and occupational choices, approximately 1,600 eighth grade students will assemble in the Lake Land College Field House April 9 and 10 for the 23rd annual Eighth Grade Career Conference.

Together, Lake Land College and Eastern Illinois Education for Employment System (EIEFES) will co-sponsor the 23rd annual Eighth Grade Career Conference, an event in which more than 40,000 students have participated over the years. Read More

Cover Crop Cost? There’s An App For That!

Planting cover crops is a hot trend but farmers who haven’t tried it yet have one question: “What’s it going to cost me?” USDA’s Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) developed a simple digital tool to answer that question. It’s called the Cover Crop Economic Decision Support Tool. It helps farmers, landowners, and others make informed decisions when considering adding cover crops to their production system. Moultrie-Douglas 4-H Youth Food Drive

The Moultrie Douglas Jr. Leaders are holding a food drive to benefit local food pantries in Moultrie and Douglas counties.

Collections of non-perishable food items, as well as unopened toiletry items, will be accepted March 16 until May 1; all donations may be dropped at the Moultrie-Douglas Extension Office at 122 S. Scholarship Available for Prospective Engineering Students

The Central Illinois Chapter of the Illinois Society of Professional Engineers is sponsoring a $1500 scholarship to a qualified central Illinois high school senior.

To be eligible, candidates should be accepted into an engineering college or a junior college with an equivalent engineering academic schedule and are encouraged to have a minimum ACT score of 28. The candidate must reside within the counties of Macon, Moultrie, Piatt, Shelby, and the southern parts of DeWitt and Logan. The southern parts of DeWitt and Logan counties are defined as including the cities of Clinton and Lincoln and those parts south of Route 10 east of I-55 and south of 1550th Street west of I-55. Seventh Coldest February on Record Wraps Up Winter in Illinois

The statewide average temperature for February was 18.6 degrees, which is 12.3 degrees below the 1981-2010 average and the seventh coldest February on record. In comparison, February 2014 was the ninth warmest at 19.5 degrees, according to Illinois State Climatologist Jim Angel, Illinois State Water Survey, University of Illinois.

Snowfall for February in Illinois was widespread and well above average. Amounts of 15 to 20 inches were common in western and northern Illinois and 10 to 15 inches across central Illinois and parts of far southern Illinois. This was eight to 12 inches above average in many locations. Read More

People may not expect building a firehouse, renovating a library or expanding a nursing home to have much in common. At USDA Rural Development in Illinois, they do. Each of these projects and countless others were made possible through a Rural Development Community Facility (CF) Program loan, guarantee or grant.

Residents look for critical services from their community such as protecting life and property, ensuring education and providing health care or public services. Small, rural communities are often faced with steep challenges when it comes to funding costly, yet basic needed services. Read More

Sullivan Elementary School recently received 60 backpacks filled with school supplies through Amazon’s “Together, We Give Back to School” campaign. End of the Line Tackle & Bait, an Amazon delivery partner, nominated Sullivan Elementary for the program, and the school’s submission was selected to receive the donation. Pictured (left to right) are Cameron Martin, Taylor Lilly, James Martin, Marla Martin and Angela McRill following the July 27 delivery.
