Locals Announce Candidacies

Several Moultrie County residents have announced their candidacy for the March 18, 2014 primaries.

On the Republican ticket, current Chief Deputy Sheriff Chris Sims will be running for Moultrie County sheriff. County board incumbents Arlene Aschermann, Todd Maxedon, and Dave McCabe will also be running.

On the Democratic ticket, incumbent treasurer Marci Thompson will seek re-election, as will incumbent county clerk Georgia England. Incumbent county board member Gary Smith will also seek another term.

The NP will print an update to the list of candidates running come December, and again in January, to include any write-in candidates. If running send your info to Keith Stewart at keith@newsprogress.com or call at 728-7381.

Student Council Spaghetti Supper Friday

The SHS Student Council will host a spaghetti supper this Friday before the Redskins’ home football game. Dinner will be served in the high school commons from 4:30-7 p.m. Dinner includes a salad, spaghetti, bread, dessert, and a drink. Tickets may be purchased in advance from any student council member or at the door. Take-out meals are also available. The spaghetti supper is the student council’s largest fundraiser of the year with profits going toward homecoming, fun night, and state convention costs.

Volunteers Needed for Youth Deer Hunt

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers at Lake Shelbyville will hold the 5th Annual Youth Firearm Deer Hunt on October 12 and 13. Volunteers are needed to help with the hunt. Volunteers will assist in helping hunters get to and from blinds, tracking, field dressing, dragging deer out of the woods and helping around deer camp. A hunter orientation and dinner will be held Oct. 11.  Read More

Carle Hospice Announces Free Day Camp To Help Children Cope With Grief

Camp Healing Heart scheduled for October 19

Monticello – Registrations are now being accepted for children ages 7-17 to attend Camp Healing Heart at the University of Illinois 4-H Memorial Park near Monticello, Ill. on October 19. Hosted by Carle Hospice, this special day camp is designed specifically for children dealing with grief associated with the loss of a loved one by focusing on emotional and physical healing, teaching healthy responses and coping skills. C.E.F.S. Economic Opportunity Corporation recently showcased their 48th year of accomplishments that demonstrated that community action helps people and changes lives. During the 2013 annual meeting various people and organizations were recognized as valuable community partners who enhanced the level of service to those in need. According to C.E.F.S. Chief Executive Officer Paul White, “Without community partners like Sullivan Post Office Employees it would have been difficult to attain and achieve the agency outcomes and successes.” Read More

Sullivan Elementary School recently received 60 backpacks filled with school supplies through Amazon’s “Together, We Give Back to School” campaign. End of the Line Tackle & Bait, an Amazon delivery partner, nominated Sullivan Elementary for the program, and the school’s submission was selected to receive the donation.
