Have you turned down a chance to go out with family or friends because you were concerned about falling? Have you cut down on a favorite activity because you might fall? If so, Matter of Balance: Managing Concerns about Falls is a program for you.

Fear of falling can be just as dangerous as falling itself. People who develop this fear often limit their activities, which can result in severe physical weakness, making the risk of falling even greater. Many older adults also experience increased isolation and depression when they limit their interactions with family and friends. A “Matter of Balance” can help people improve their quality of life and remain independent.

The City of Sullivan Gas Department starting going house to house to ensure that all gas meters are functioning properly on April 10. During this time, crews may also be painting your meter if needed to prevent rust.

Ten Thousand Hands of Snow

I spent a lot of time with chickens when I was a little girl. Feeding them and gathering eggs was my daily family chore and 4-H project. I had names for them. They were among my best friends.

I learned a lot about human nature from chickens. I observed the pecking order firsthand, which most species, including humans, seem to have. Greed is another. I remember a chicken will duck its head and run when it catches a juicy grasshopper. Soon, the whole chicken yard is chasing it, whether it has a bug or not. The duck and run action set them all astir, not an honest-to-goodness bug. 

2015

A short-lived men’s softball team, the Sullivan Chiefs, was inducted into the Amateur Softball Association Hall of Fame.

Competing in the annual Arthur Invite, the host’s girls finished second and the boys third, while SOV’s boys took 11th.

The students represented in the 2014-2015 Cultivating Creativity: Consolidated Communications Children’s Art Exhibition were recognized for their achievement at an awards reception. Local students recognized included Taylor Brown of Windsor Elementary School; Maria Garza of Arthur Junior High School; Cheyenne Hardin of Windsor Junior/Senior High School; Logan Kauff man of Arthur-Lovington High School; Marlene Otto of Arthur Grade School; Jewel Smith of Okaw Valley Middle School and Emily Walker of Okaw Valley High School.

4-H members from Coles, Cumberland, Douglas, and Moultrie counties competed in public speaking on Saturday, March 29, at Sarah Bush Lincoln Health Center’s Lumpkin Center.

Members could compete in formal, illustrated, or oral interpretation speech presentations. The members presented in front of judges from the University of Illinois, who scored them on physical presence, clarity of purpose, relatability to the audience, originality, use of visual aids, use of voice, and use of gestures and space.
