The American Red Cross back to school safety list

News Progress Posted on August 14, 2024 by webmasterAugust 14, 2024

•August 14, 2024•

A reminder for drivers as school buses take to the road again

The American Red Cross offers this checklist you can follow to help make sure your student is safe as they go back to the classroom.

If your student is younger or going to school for the first time, teach them their phone number, address, how to get in touch with their parents at work, how to get in touch with another trusted adult and how to dial 911 also teach young children not to talk to strangers or accept rides from someone they don’t know.

If your child walks to school, teach them to walk on the sidewalk. If no sidewalk is available, walk facing traffic. Stop and look left, right and left again to see if cars are coming and never run out into the street or cross between parked cars. Cross the street at the corner, obey traffic signals and stay in the crosswalk.  Read More

Extension Educator

University of Illinois Extension

Illinois Extension Educator Tessa Hobbs-Curley recently posted this article on the Family Files Blog and it is super timely right now and an important topic to explore. Tessa says: It is July of 2024, and we are in the trenches of political debate for President of the United States. People are passionate about their political perspectives, which is good; however, ideally, it is important to communicate respectfully, whether at home or out and about with others. No one should ever leave who they are, but we are obligated to contribute to the greater good, so showing respect for one another must be essential. According to associate professor Rachel Wahl, University of Virginia states that “For Democracy, Talking is more important than agreeing.  Read More

Highway updates

News Progress Posted on August 14, 2024 by webmasterAugust 14, 2024

•August 14, 2024•

A short but sweet update for Central Illinois came at the end of July with the state releasing news about a one million dollar highway safety upgrade for Route 45. This upgrade will include street lights added in parts, a great addition to the highway as more and more student drivers hit the road each week. More than 70% of teens in recent years have been claiming they feel anxious or nervous to drive in dark or dim conditions, some refusing to even drive in bad weather. IDOT as a response to years of complaints from across the state, will be installing new lights at 14 different rural intersections The lighting change was a choice made after several fatal car accidents on the highway happened over years with little to no change. There will be no road closure for this improvement project since the work will be done on the sides of the road, expect minor traffic impacts such as reduced speed. Having starting working on the project in May, IDOT is expected to have it completed in about four months, just before we round up 2024 as a whole.

Poppies to honor those who gave all

News Progress

On Friday, May 22nd, Ruth Keown, Vice-President of the Sullivan American Legion Auxiliary Unit 68, greeted the public at the entrance to the local Post Office, distributing Memorial Poppies. Each year, millions of Americans wear these Memorial Poppies in memory of American service members who lost their lives in war while serving their country, and to assist those Veterans who are now hospitalized or in rehabilitation, suffering from wounds and illnesses. Memorial Day poppies distributed by the American Legion symbolize the ultimate sacrifice made by service members and are a tribute to those who lost their lives in war. Wearing the poppy is a way to honor the fallen and ensure their bravery is never forgotten.
