Travelers on the Kaskaskia-Detroit Road

The 1700s French Kaskaskia-Detroit Road has captured the imagination of others before our group of hardy explorers found its route through Moultrie and Shelby Counties. Adin Baber, a Coles County historian, describes travelers gathered in a Kaskaskia inn at the end of the trail in an article for the Illinois Historical Society Journal.

“Our couriers de bois had just come in over the long trail by the shortest way from Fort Detroit…He was born and raised in a French Canadian backwoods and is a master hunter, trapper and boatman. His companion is but recently over from Old France, and sits apart, silent. He is on some mysterious errand for his King and must needs hurry on down the Mississippi tomorrow…Mostly French they are, one a trader who has brought some Spanish mares from the southwest and plans to take them to a better market at Vincennes; …another sits there, a swarthy man, a Spaniard. Some Indians stand stolidly by.”  Read More

Illinois Amish Heritage Center celebrates the power of steam engines

On August 2nd and 3rd the Illinois Amish Heritage Center celebrated another Threshing Days filled with vintage steam engines, food, demonstrations and tours.

The purpose of this event is to show attendees how crops were grown and harvested using steam, gasoline and horse power as demonstrated by the Keck-Gonnerman steam engine which powers a Keck-Gonnerman threshing machine and other threshing machines powered by tractors and horses. Also on display was the Ellis Champion #1 threshing machine which was build in 1880 and cost $1,095.

A Look Back…8-7-2024

Near the beginning of June, 16 Sullivan students from both the eighth and ninth grade classes traveled to Tampa, Fla. and experienced nonstop hands-on science, first beginning with a trip north of Tampa to the Crystal Springs Preserve. There the students swam with manatees and even interacted with a mother and its calf, before then traveling to the Rainbow River, where students enjoyed more snorkeling in the fresh water spring fed river.

Thirty-four new practical nurses were welcomed to the nursing field at a recent pinning ceremony held at Lake Land College, including Brennyn Kirk of Gays. Read More

After-School care for Sullivan

Angler’s annual Tribute to Veterans, 5th anniversary celebration

The annual Angler’s Tribute to Veterans started at 1pm Saturday, July 27th, celebrated the 5th anniversary of the event taking place, hosting a giveaway sponsored by The Boat Dock of a free boat giveaway. The event is an annual weekend celebration where 24 veterans have a weekend that is focused on honoring them for their service and dedication to the country.

Donna Arendell to present program

GriefShare at First Christian Church

GriefShare, a grief support group, will be held at First Christian Church, 1357 CR 1200 E, Sullivan, each Tuesday from 6:00 to 8:00 pm, August 20 through November 12. If you have experienced the death of a family member or friend, you are invited to attend. 

No matter what the circumstances, grief is a painful, confusing process. A GriefShare group is a safe, welcoming place where people understand the difficult emotions of grief. At this 13-week support group program, you’ll discover what to expect in the days ahead, what’s “normal” in grief, and helpful ways of coping with grief. Read More

SDS Summer Spectacular

The SDS Summer Spectacular took place on Saturday August 3rd on the south side of the square. Featuring many fun things for adults and children alike, there was something for everyone on the square. Sullivan Dance Studio is no stranger to summer events and programs, having many different programs for children who need After-School Care, Summer Camps and No School Days. 

Starting bright and early at nine in the morning, the square was heating up with the smell of tacos and the sound of laughter. Provided on the square was a taco food truck and sno cones for a delicious surprise. Even better than food there were tons of fun and unique things to try, ranging from face painting, glow in the dark mini golf, inflatable attractions, try us dance classes and a cash grab.  Read More

Personal Assistant Training

Soyland Access to Independent Living, SAIL, will hold a Personal Assistant Training for people interested in working as a Personal Assistant on Thursday, August 15, beginning at 1 pm at the Elizabeth Titus Memorial Library, 2 Water Street, Sullivan.  Personal Assistants are employed by people with disabilities to perform household chores and personal care tasks in their homes and are paid by the State of Illinois through the Department of Rehabilitation Program. A reservation is needed to attend the Personal Assistant Training. Park Rec week

The Lovington Park board threw a children’s Park Rec week from Monday, July 22nd to Friday, July 26th. Each day celebrated a different fun thing for the children to do. Filled with multiple food venders from none other than the locally popular Pauly’s BBQ, Lovington Casey’s General, Lovington Dollar General and Kona Ice. The park board helping hand and child supervision team consisted of Jennifer, Aleena, Chilton Ingram, Krista Hale, Gabby Hutchercraft, Zeb Peck, Maddix, Owen Crum and Logan Mitchell. Donyell Morgan, provided the material and budget for the park board to produce this community event Monday, the first day of Park Rec, was simple games and crafts at the park. Offering giant bowling, building blocks, side walk chalk and new friends. Tuesday, was a wild day. The kids attending got to meet the creatures and their care takers from Aikman Wildlife. The crafts for the day included a painting Tom the Snake, friendship bracelets and a surprise snack of spaghetti. Wednesday was a massive hit for the heating up summer, water day filled with games and splashing fun with blow up water slides. There was never a dry moment. Thursday was community day, taking children on a trip around Lovington to see what the grown ups do all day. Stopping by the Library and the Fire House, seeing and even getting to stand on a fire truck and ambulance. Friday, the Lovington Park Board went above and beyond, hosting a Carnival Day for the children. Offering hotdogs, popcorn and nachos as snack options, the kids showed up in their tie-dye shirts that they made as a craft on the first day of the week. Complete with a carnival snack stand, ring toss mock games and inflatable prizes.

Poppies to honor those who gave all

On Friday, May 22nd, Ruth Keown, Vice-President of the Sullivan American Legion Auxiliary Unit 68, greeted the public at the entrance to the local Post Office, distributing Memorial Poppies. Each year, millions of Americans wear these Memorial Poppies in memory of American service members who lost their lives in war while serving their country, and to assist those Veterans who are now hospitalized or in rehabilitation, suffering from wounds and illnesses. Memorial Day poppies distributed by the American Legion symbolize the ultimate sacrifice made by service members and are a tribute to those who lost their lives in war. Wearing the poppy is a way to honor the fallen and ensure their bravery is never forgotten.
