IDPH reports the first bird in Illinois to test positive in 2024 for the West Nile virus.

•May 15, 2024•

By Angela Hogan

The Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH) has reported the first 2024 West Nile virus (WNV) positive bird specimen in Illinois was collected in Douglas County. The report of this first positive test among the bird population in Illinois follows a relatively mild winter and spring. People who see a sick or dead crow, blue jay, robin, or other perching bird should contact their local health department to determine if the bird specimen is eligible for testing.

What is West Nile Virus?

West Nile virus is transmitted through the bite of a Culex mosquito, commonly called a house mosquito, that has picked up the virus by feeding on an infected bird. The mosquito then transmits the virus by biting another host, such as a bird, horse, or human.  Read More

…And Remembering How to Go

•May 15, 2024•

by Janet Roney

“Grandma, did you know that numbers can go on forever and ever and never end?” asked our precocious 6 year old granddaughter in her chirpy little voice coming from the back seat of the car.

“Yes,” I said.  “That’s called infinity.”

“And that’s just like God, isn’t it, Grandma?” asked our equally precocious 5 year old grandson. “He goes on for ever and ever, too…Right, Grandma?”  Read More

Arthur’s Strawberry Jam Festival/Social

News Progress Posted on May 8, 2024 by webmasterMay 8, 2024

•May 8, 2024•

Mother Nature doesn’t always cooperate with local festivals. For the first time in several years, the Strawberry Jam Festival in Arthur will be held Friday & Saturday, May 17 & 18, two weeks earlier than normal. You have to have strawberries to have a great festival and the strawberries should be ready by then.

While the festival will be early, the committee is ready to roll out the “strawberry” red carpet to welcome festival goers to a weekend of fun and sweet eating. What better way to celebrate late spring and early summer than with America’s favorite fruit. Adding excitement to the occasion with be pony rides (Saturday only), a variety of vendors and great food mixed together to create Arthur Amish Country’s Strawberry Jam Festival. Stores will have a wide variety of merchandise you won’t want to miss, along with crafts and of course food. You won’t go away empty handed or hungry. Read More

Poppies to honor those who gave all

News Progress

On Friday, May 22nd, Ruth Keown, Vice-President of the Sullivan American Legion Auxiliary Unit 68, greeted the public at the entrance to the local Post Office, distributing Memorial Poppies. Each year, millions of Americans wear these Memorial Poppies in memory of American service members who lost their lives in war while serving their country, and to assist those Veterans who are now hospitalized or in rehabilitation, suffering from wounds and illnesses. Memorial Day poppies distributed by the American Legion symbolize the ultimate sacrifice made by service members and are a tribute to those who lost their lives in war. Wearing the poppy is a way to honor the fallen and ensure their bravery is never forgotten.
